Gary Hyman is in his second season as UTSA’s special teams coordinator.
Armed with more than 15 years of coaching experience, Hyman made his mark on the Roadrunners' special teams during the 2018 campaign. Yannis Routsas left UTSA as the career record-holder for punts (254) and punting average (41.5) and the honorable mention All-Conference USA selection broke his own school single-season mark by averaging 43.0 yards per punt, which ranked second in the league and 35th in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Jared Sackett, who was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award and also garnered honorable mention all-conference accolades, made 14 of 19 field goals and was perfect on extra-point attempts. Grant Merka collected second-team all-conference honors after a season that saw him produce clean snaps on all 114 attempts as a key member of the punt and extra-point/field goal units.
Hyman was the special teams coordinator at Northern Arizona during the 2017 season. He helped the Lumberjacks to seven wins and an appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Prior to his tenure at NAU, Hyman was the special teams coordinator at Indiana State during the 2016 season.
He spent the 2015 campaign as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Kansas after serving the previous year as Texas A&M's quality control coach for special teams.
Prior to his time in College Station, Hyman coached the wide receivers and special teams at South Dakota School of Mines (2012-13), served as a graduate assistant for offense and special teams at UTEP (2010-11) and was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at USC (2009).
Hyman has been to three bowl games during his time as a coach, the 2009 Emerald Bowl, 2010 New Mexico Bowl and 2014 Liberty Bowl.
Hyman was a standout wide receiver at Humboldt State in 1994-96.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Humboldt State in 2000 and his master's degree from Cal State Stanislaus in 2004.
