Jeff Kastl is in his fourth season at UTSA and his first as the program's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after serving as receivers coach the past three seasons, as well as passing game coordinator in 2018.
Kastl was one of Wilson’s first hires at UTSA when he was named wide receivers coach on Jan. 20, 2016, just five days after Wilson was named the second head coach in program history, and he is the longest-tenured assistant coach on the staff.
His receivers broke 10 school records during his three seasons mentoring that position group.
Kerry Thomas Jr. finished his career as UTSA’s all-time receiving yardage leader with 1,630 and receiving touchdowns with 17. He also set the single-season receiving TDs standard with eight in 2016.
Josh Stewart etched his name atop the school record book in a trio of categories. He set career marks for receiving yards per game with 50.0 and single season standards for receiving yards with 682 and yards per receptions with 18.94, both in 2016.
Greg Campbell Jr. broke single-game records for receptions and receiving yards with 11 catches for 186 against North Texas in 2018. With that performance in his final game as a Roadrunner, he also moved atop the program’s single-season lists for receptions with 58 and receiving yards per game with 59.8. In addition, Campbell also leaped into second place on the single-season receiving yards chart with 658.
In Kastl's first season with the Roadrunners, he helped lead the team to six wins and the program's first-ever bowl game, the 2016 Gildan New Mexico Bowl. His receivers combined to haul in 150 passes for 2,095 yards and 21 touchdowns, helping the offense set numerous school records, including single-season marks for points (379), touchdowns (49) and passing touchdowns (26). Stewart broke the season standard for receiving yards with 682 (36 receptions) on his way to honorable mention All-Conference USA accolades, while Thomas Jr. set school records with eight receiving touchdowns on the year and 145 receiving yards against Charlotte, the latter which was later broken by Campbell Jr. in the 2018 season finale.
His wide receivers combined to catch 152 passes for 1,885 yards and 11 touchdowns to help UTSA to its second straight season of being bowl eligible in 2017. Stewart led the way with 39 catches and 518 receiving yards, while Thomas Jr. hauled in 35 passes for 453 yards and a team-best four TDs and finished his career as the program's all-time leader in receiving yards (1,630) and touchdowns (17).
In 2018, Kastl was named passing game coordinator in addition to his role as receivers coach. The receiving corps combined for 155 receptions, 1,624 receiving yards and seven TDs. Campbell Jr. set single-game records for receptions and receiving yards with 11 catches for 186 against North Texas and moved atop the program’s single-season lists for receptions with 58 and receiving yards per game with 59.8. In addition, Campbell also finished his career ranked second on the single-season receiving yards chart with 658.
Kastl spent the 2015 season as an offensive analyst at LSU. Working closely with the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks, he helped the Tigers to a 9-3 record that was capped with a 56-27 win against Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl and a No. 16 final ranking.
Kastl was a defensive analyst at Michigan for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. There, he helped the Wolverines to 12 wins and the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in 2013.
In 2012, Kastl was a graduate assistant coach at Auburn, where he worked with the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
Kastl also spent three seasons at Ashland, an NCAA Division II program in Ohio. He was the offensive coordinator and tutored the quarterbacks and wide receivers for the 2011 season, helping the Eagles lead the nation in least interceptions thrown. Prior to that, he spent two years serving as the recruiting coordinator and running backs/tight ends coach.
He got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan in 2007, where he spent two seasons with the Chippewas. He helped lead the team to a conference championship in his first year on the staff.
Kastl played quarterback at Michigan in 2002-06, helping the Wolverines to a pair of Big Ten titles during his career. He was the U of M Athletic Academic Achievement Award winner all five years and earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades as a senior.
The Clinton Township, Mich., native earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management and communications from Michigan in 2006 and his master’s degree in sports management from Michigan in 2009.
He and his wife, Kate, have two daughters, Maeve and Hannah.
