Bennett Dettlinger is in his first season as quality control for the defense and special teams. He is responsible for scouting and film breakdown of opponents’ offenses and special teams, organizing scout teams and preparing videos for meetings.
Dettlinger comes to UTSA after a two-year stint in various roles at Western Kentucky. He helped the Hilltoppers to 20 wins, a pair of bowl victories, a Conference USA Championship and No. 24 final ranking in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
In 2015, he was a graduate assistant for the offense and special teams on a staff that led WKU to a 12-2 record, the C-USA title and a Miami Beach Bowl win against South Florida.
Dettlinger helped tutor the program’s wide receivers to record-setting performances. Taywan Taylor hauled in 86 receptions for 1,467 yards and 17 touchdowns — all single-season records — while Nicholas Norris finished just 29 yards shy of becoming the third 1,000-yard receiver in program history. Additionally, were it not for Taylor’s 86 receptions, Jared Dangerfield’s 82 grabs would have broken his own single-season receiving record.
Additionally, place-kicker Garrett Schwettman earned first-team all-conference honors after making 15-of-16 field goals and 79-of-80 extra points, while kick returner Kylen Towner was a second-team selection and punter Jake Collins garnered C-USA All-Freshman Team accolades.
In 2014, Dettlinger served as special teams quality control, helping the Hilltoppers to an 8-5 record that was capped by a 49-48 triumph over Central Michigan in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. Schwettman and long snapper Nolan Dowling were named honorable mention all-conference and Towner was a C-USA All-Freshman Team pick.
Dettlinger also spent time in 2014 working with the WKU strength staff, as well as the video staff in an internship role.
The Louisville, Ky., native played college football at North Park, an NCAA Division III school in Chicago. He was a four-year letterwinner and a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin All-Conference selection at middle linebacker as a senior in 2013 after leading the team in tackles and tackles for loss.
Dettlinger earned his bachelor of science degree in exercise science with a minor in business and economics from North Park in 2014. He began work toward his master’s degree in intercollegiate athletic administration at WKU.
He prepped at Louisville’s Male High School.
