Charlie Reeve is in his third season as an assistant coach at UTSA, where he tutors the program’s tight ends.
Last year, Reeve helped tutor an offense that compiled 3,570 total yards, 1,466 on the ground and 2,104 through the air. His tight ends combined for 434 receiving yards and a touchdown on 32 receptions and they helped clear the way for a rushing attack that averaged 122.2 yards per game and reached paydirt 16 times. David Morgan II hauled in 20 passes for 255 yards and a score and was named honorable mention All-Conference USA.
In 2013, Reeve helped lead UTSA to a 7-5 overall record, including victories over a pair of bowl teams. The Roadrunners finished second in the West Division with a 6-2 mark in their first season in C-USA. He helped mentor an offense that averaged 417.8 yards (175.4 rush/242.4 pass) and 25.6 points per game. The tight ends combined for 405 receiving yards, including 274 yards and a pair of scores by honorable mention all-conference performer Cole Hubble.
In his first year with the Roadrunners, the program registered an 8-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in its first and only season in the Western Athletic Conference. The campaign was highlighted by historic wins against South Alabama, the program’s first road and Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) victory, and New Mexico State, its first league win. The offense averaged 31.2 points and 390.2 yards (159.2 rush/231.0 pass) per game and scored 44 touchdowns and he mentored the tight ends to 453 yards and five TDs receiving. Hubble collected honorable mention All-WAC honors.
Reeve came to the Alamo City from Odessa where he served as the passing game coordinator and assistant coach for wide receivers under head coach Gary Gaines at Permian High School. He helped the Panthers to a 6-5 record and the bi-district round of the 2011 Class 5A playoffs and two of his receivers were named all-district.
The Victoria native spent five years at Texas State serving in several different capacities. He was an assistant coach from 2007-10, overseeing the running backs for all four years. Reeve helped the offense finish seventh in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in scoring (38.3 ppg) and eighth in total offense (460.2 ypg) in 2008 and 12th in total offense (422.2 ypg) the following season. He helped tutor Bobcats running backs to five All-Southland Conference honors.
Reeve was named Texas State’s interim head coach from December 2010-January 2011 before moving into the director of operations position until July 2011.
He spent one season as the offensive graduate assistant coach at Rice in 2006, where he helped tutor All-America wide receiver Jarret Dillard. He helped lead the Owls to a 7-6 record, a runner-up finish in Conference USA with a 6-2 mark and to the New Orleans Bowl, the program’s first bowl in 45 years (1961 Bluebonnet Bowl). Rice’s revival in 2006 was the second-best turnaround among FBS schools.
Reeve was the quarterbacks coach at Bay City (Texas) High School in 2004, where he helped the Black Cats to a 9-2 record, co-district championship and the area round of the Class 4A playoffs. His quarterback garnered all-district accolades.
He also was the defensive ends and receivers coach at Cuero (Texas) High School in 2005, where he helped guide the Gobblers to a 13-1 record, the district title and the state semifinal round of the Class 3A playoffs. One of his defensive ends was tabbed all-state and the district’s defensive player of the year, while two others were picked all-district.
Reeve was a record-setting quarterback at Pearl River (Miss.) Community College from 2000-01. He led the nation in passing and total offense en route to earning first-team NJCAA All-American and Region XIII Player of the Year honors as a sophomore in 2001. He also was the conference player of the year, the league’s offensive MVP and the runner-up for the NJCAA Player of the Year that season. He broke seven school passing records during his career with the Wildcats.
Reeve signed to play at Texas State in 2002, but suffered a career-ending injury. He was asked to stay on as a student assistant coach, where he worked with the defensive backs in 2003 and the quarterbacks and wide receivers the previous season.
Reeve earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise sports science with a minor in history from Texas State in 2004.
Reeve and his wife, Courtney, have three sons, Ryder, Bear and Jase.
