Mike Clement just wrapped up his fourth season as a member of the Roadrunners’ coaching staff and third as a full-time assistant. Clement, who was the program's volunteer coach in 2006, serves as the team’s hitting and third base coach in addition to mentoring UTSA's catchers and outfielders.
In his four seasons, the Roadrunners have won two Southland Conference Regular Season Championships (2007-08), 16 hitters have earned All-SLC honors (including four first teamers) and the offense has set a total of 30 school records.
UTSA rewrote the record book yet again this past spring, setting new program standards for batting average (.317), hits (661), home runs (89), total bases (1,109) and slugging percentage (.532) and just missed school records for runs (461), doubles (131) and RBIs (409). The Birds easily shattered the previous mark for long balls, 66 in 1999 (60 games), doing so in the season's 49th contest.
That performance came on the heels of one of the most-prolific offensive years on school record in 2008. The Roadrunners set new program marks for batting average (.316), runs scored (467), hits (647), doubles (134), RBIs (419), total bases (1,005) and slugging percentage (.490) while finishing second in home runs (64) and on-base percentage (.397).
The previous season saw UTSA club a then-school-record 122 doubles and post what was then the second-highest hits (616), triples (23), home runs (61), total bases (967) and slugging percentage (.475) totals in school annals. UTSA also scored the third-most runs (392), posted the third-highest batting average (.303) and registered the third-best RBIs (361) totals in program history.
All-American Michael Rockett developed into one of the country's top center fielders under Clement's watchful eye, throwing out 26 runners trying to advance on the basepaths during his four-year career in addition to making several highlight-reel catches. Meanwhile, catcher Zach Etheredge posted a .987 fielding percentage,allowed just four passed balls (none in 2008) and threw out 27 percentof base runners attempting to steal in his final two seasons as the regular starter.
Prior to coming to UTSA for the 2006 campaign, Clement served as an assistant for one year at Kirkwood Junior College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and then spent one year at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. Clement also was an assistant coach for the Orleans Cardinals in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) in the summers of 2005 and ’06 and he helped lead the team to the 2005 CCBL Championship.
A former college catcher, he played two seasons at Kirkwood, during which time the team posted a 91-25 record. Clement finished his college career at Morningside, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education/secondary education in 2002. He then played professionally for the Canton Coyotes of the Frontier League for one season.
His younger brother, Jeff, was an All-America catcher at USC from 2003-05 and the third overall choice in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Seattle Mariners. He made his MLB debut on Sept. 7, 2007, against the New York Yankees in legendary Yankee Stadium.
Clement married the former Nicole Morgan in October 2007 in their hometown of Marshalltown, Iowa.
