Roadrunners to visit UAB in American Conference clash

SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team is back on the road, this time making the trek to Birmingham, Alabama, for a three-game American Conference series against UAB at Mary Bowers Field spanning Friday through Sunday.

The Roadrunners (20-26, 8-10 American) and Blazers (19-24, 6-12 American) will first battle on Friday at 5:30 p.m., ahead of game two on Saturday at 1 p.m., and the finale on Sunday at noon.

UTSA will be looking to snap a six-game skid after dropping a series to Wichita State, while UAB took one of three against Tulsa last time out.

As a team, the Roadrunners remain second in the American Conference with 351 hits and an average of 5.01 strikeouts per seven innings, topping the league.

Individually, freshman Arlette Hernandez has started 24 games, the eighth-most in the NCAA, and has 14 complete games, the 12th-most. She pitched 138.2 innings for the 15th-most nationally, and 132 strikeouts are 25th.

The Blazers check in at 15th nationally with 22 double plays turned on the year, and they boast a .975 fielding percentage that ranks 25th. Abbi Perkins has been solid behind the plate, leading the American League with nine runners caught stealing.

Olivia Cummings has found success in the circle with the sixth-lowest walks allowed per seven innings across the country at 0.96. She also holds a 2.92 strikeout-to-walk ratio that paces the conference. Cummings has gone 8-8 thus far with a 3.61 ERA and 35 strikeouts, while Caitlin Russell has fanned 33 with a 3.49 ERA and a 6-6 record.

At the dish, Ashlyn Shirah hits .351 to top the team, and Hannah Dorsett is not far behind at .342. Shirah owns a squad-high 29 RBIs to go with five home runs.
