THE WEEK THAT WAS

Last Friday, UTSA visited Memphis and UAB, going down in five and four sets, respectively.  After amassing a 2-1 lead on Friday, the ‘Runners failed to capitalize in a decisive fifth frame. Two days later, the Blazers racked up 22 blocks to stifle the Roadrunners’ attack as the Navy & Orange posted a season-high 34 attack errors, hitting .162 as a unit.

BACK IN THE LONE STAR STATE

Each of UTSA’s final four contests will be held in the state of Texas, highlighted by three in the Convocation Center. Four of the Roadrunners’ past five contests, including three in a row, have come away from home. Additionally, if the Navy & Orange clinch a berth in the American Conference Championship, the three-day tournament will be held at Rice’s Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. This fall, the ‘Runners are 10-3 in Texas, including a 7-3 home mark and a perfect three-win weekend at Houston’s Flo Hyman Classic.

WEEKEND THEMES

Friday’s bout against Rice is UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces match. While supplies last, USAA will provide Rowdy bobbleheads and UTSA pennants when doors open at 5 p.m. Additionally, the Children’s Hunger Fund is holding a food drive on Friday. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to the collection tables in the Convocation Center lobby to help support the San Antonio community. On Sunday, the program hosts Rowdy Rodeo, presented by Cowboys AC & Heating.

ABOUT THE OWLS

Rice is under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Genny Volpe, who boasts a 449-236 record in her time with the program. The Owls are 9-3 in American play as they search for their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and a second straight league regular-season title. Rice is the final American foe UTSA has yet to face, with Friday’s contest marking the two sides’ only regular-season matchup.

UTSA matched up with Rice three times a season ago, including in its American Conference Championship opening-round bout, failing to take a set against the Owls in 2025. Rice has taken 19 straight contests head-to-head, with the Roadrunners’ last victory over its in-state foe coming on Oct. 21, 2016, in a home sweep.

ABOUT THE SHOCKERS

Wichita State is under the direction of 27th-year head coach Chris Lamb, who holds a record of 551-279 in his time with the program. The Shockers hosted the ‘Runners back on Oct. 16, prevailing in five sets to snap a five-match skid despite 35 attack errors and 11 missed serves. In the contest, redshirt junior Ledisi Kpea became the first student-athlete in program history to tally 14 total blocks, doing so with three of the solo variety to go with six kills on a .444 hitting percentage.
