SAN ANTONIO – On Tuesday, Head UTSA Men’s Tennis Coach Nick Castro officially announced that 2013 ITA National Coach of the Year Jenny Mainz has joined the staff as an assistant coach.
“I’m incredibly excited to welcome Jenny to our coaching staff this year,” Castro said. “She brings a tremendous wealth of coaching experience, including many years of leadership as a head coach, and I know there will be valuable opportunities for me to learn from her as well. What excites me most is her approach to the game, the relationships she builds with the players, and how closely our coaching philosophies align. I’m confident that her experience, perspective, and ability to connect with our team will make her an outstanding addition to our program.”
Mainz previously spent 26 seasons at the helm of the Alabama women’s tennis program, collecting Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year nods in 2011, 2012 and 2014. A Blue Gray National Tennis Hall of Famer and an Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame member, Mainz was a six-time ITA Southern Region Coach of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2019. Mainz is also a member of the Winston Churchill High School Hall of Fame and the USTA Alabama Tennis Foundation Hall of Fame.
She led the Crimson Tide to 15 NCAA Championship appearances and had tandems win NCAA Doubles Championships in 2014 and 2015, with another finishing as runners-up in 2017. In total, Mainz won four SEC Western Division titles in 2003, 2006, 2011, and 2012, had 29 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship selections, and coached 11 All-Americans.
Off the court, she helped shape collegiate tennis, serving as the ITA Southern Region Chairperson for six years and was on the ITA Operating Committee for seven years. Mainz was on the ITA Executive Committee and the ITA Board of Directors, and she was Co-Chair of the ITA Women’s Tennis Committee for two years.
