About the UTSA Roadrunners
Led in the opener by acting head coach Nick Bowman, the UTSA Roadrunners are looking to shake off the 4-25 finish to the 2025-26 season with virtually a whole new roster coming to the court in San Jose. Sophomore Dorian Hayes is the lone returning player this season, following a productive rookie campaign that produced averages of 8.8 points, 1.8 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game – leading the Roadrunners with 55 threes a year ago.
Joining Hayes, the Roadrunners have added 10 transfers and four players from the high school ranks, consisting of junior point guard KJ Tenner (Murray State, 6.0 ppg, 2.1 apg), junior point guard Josiah LeGree (Morehead State, 7.5 ppg, 3.3 apg), sophomore guard JJ Kelly (Ohio, 8.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg), redshirt senior guard Preston Turner (Eastern Illinois, 7.7 ppg, 1.7 rpg), senior guard Isaiah Watts (Maryland, 4.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg), senior guard Isaiah Coleman (Oklahoma State, 6.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg), graduate guard Demari Williams (Houston Christian, 9.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg), redshirt junior guard Shey Eberwein (South Dakota, 7.7 ppg, 1.7 rpg) and graduate forward Ashton Smith (South Dakota, 4.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg) from the DI transfer ranks. Also joining UTSA from Highland CC in Illinois is redshirt senior post Chinedum Okpukpara, coming off an NJCAA All-Region First Team season ranking second in the nation in rebounds (10.5) and blocks/blocks per game (86/2.89), in addition to 14.3 ppg as a scorer.
After averaging 69.5 points on 39.8 percent shooting with 36.2 rebounds, the Roadrunners look to return to the style of play that kept the squad in the upper tier of the national scoring in 2024-25 – featuring heavy defense leading to fast break scoring and emphasis on the perimeter. In 2024-25, UTSA averaged 76.7 ppg on 42.3 shooting from the field and 36.1 from three, putting away an American-best, 25th in the nation 9.9 threes per game, while ranking ninth in the NCAA on 15.1 fast break points per game. That team was ninth in steals per game (9.5) and 14th in forced turnovers (15.2).
About the San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State is coming off its own challenging 9-25 season and heading into the sixth season under Tim Miles, looking to turn the corner with a similar roster rebuild to UTSA’s. The Spartans welcome six new players from the transfer portal, five freshman and a former player returning to the squad, with Robert Vaihola transferring back after going to Minnesota last year.
The Spartans return just two players, guard Pasha Goodarzi with 8.2 points and 1.9 rebounds averages last year, while guard JaVaughn Hannah was previously the MAC Sixth Man of the Year at Western Michigan and an injury limited him to two games last year. A forward, Vaihola averaged 7.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 2.0 apg in his last season with the Spartans and SJSU is also looking for boosts from forward Luke Howard (Simon Fraser, 16.7 ppg, 6.1 rpg), guard Joey Chammaa (Arkansas State, 9.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg) and forward Zine Eddine Bedri out of Columbia (12.6 ppg).
Last season, SJSU averaged 72.0 ppg while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 35.8 from three but struggling on the boards with a near NCAA-last 29.7 rpg. The Spartans limited turnovers but allowed 78.5 ppg on 49.4 percent opponent shooting.
Series History
This is the fifth meeting in the series, dating back to 2010 and 2011 as non-conference foes – ahead of UTSA briefly joining the Western Athletic Conference for the 2012-13 season. The series is split at 2-2 with SJSU holding the 1-0 advantage in San Jose. UTSA lost its only prior outing on the road in San Jose with a 72-66 loss in 2012. The Spartans also came away from their 2012 trip to the Convocation Center with an 80-67 win. However, UTSA earned the 2013 WAC Tournament victory in Paradise, Nevada, going up 67-49 on a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double from Jeromie Hill and 20 points from Kannon Burrage. The Roadrunners also claimed the series opener with a 72-63 victory at the Convo in 2010.
There was supposed to be one more game on the history, as the second regular-season WAC meeting in 2012-13 was canceled in a “rain out” due to multiple roof leaks at The Event Center just 12 minutes before tipoff from heavy rains blanketing the area.
In addition, SJSU’s Tim Miles is facing UTSA with his third school as a coach, holding a 2-0 record after coaching Nebraska in 2017 and Colorado State in 2011 during the respective games with the Roadrunners.
Up Next
The 2026-27 home opener is on the schedule for the Roadrunners, kicking off the Convocation Center slate on Saturday, Nov. 7, tipping off at 4 p.m. against VMI in the first meeting between these schools since 2003.
