Roadrunners announce 2026-27 non-conference schedule

SAN ANTONIO – The 2026-27 UTSA men’s basketball schedule is officially set, as third-year head coach Austin Claunch announced Wednesday the Roadrunners’ non-conference dates for the upcoming season. The non-conference slate will add eight dates to the Convocation Center schedule, facing opposition from 12 different conferences in the 14-game non-league schedule.

Featuring 14 newcomers to the roster, the 2026-27 edition of the Roadrunners will make its debut on the road on Monday, Nov. 2, at San Jose State’s Provident Credit Union Event Center in California – opening on the road for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Hailing from the Mountain West, the Spartans went 9-24 last season, reaching the second round of the conference tournament, and head into the sixth season under Tim Miles – who led SJSU to the NIT in 2024-25. This is the fifth meeting between these teams, the last coming in 2013.

Matching up for the first time since 2003, VMI (Virginia Military Institute) is slated for the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Convo. A member of the Southern Conference, the Keydets were 6-26 a year ago and enter year five under Andrew Wilson this season.

In a return game from last season, the Roadrunners will travel to West Coast Conference foe Seattle U at the Redhawk Center on Wednesday, Nov. 11. After coming to the Convo for a gritty fight last December, the Redhawks went on to a 21-14 record, reaching the second round of the NIT in a close loss to Auburn. Seattle is in year six under Chris Victor and this will be the fourth meeting in the series.

A four-game set at the Convo covers most of the remaining opening month, starting with Texas State in the Battle for I-35 on Sunday, Nov. 15. With an extensive rivalry series, the Roadrunners and Bobcats face off for the 65th time dating back to 1985, and in back-to-back seasons. Terrence Johnson enters his seventh year at TXST, while the now-Pac 12 Bobcats went 19-13 last year in the Sun Belt, winning eight of their final 10 games.

Squaring off with the Southwestern Athletic Conference foe for the first time, UTSA will host Florida A&M on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The Rattlers were 15-16 in 2025-26, reaching the second round of the SWAC tournament after tying for second in the regular-season league standings. FAMU enters the second season under former NBA point guard and two-sport Florida State standout Charlie Ward.

Hoops will be all around during the Thanksgiving holiday week, with UTSA hosting a multi-team event for the first time since 2023-24, debuting the Military City Classic presented by USAA, which runs from Nov. 21-26 at the Convocation Center. Opening up the event, UTSA will face Mountain West foe Air Force for the first time, hosting the Falcons on Saturday, Nov. 21. The Falcons were 3-29 last year and 2026-27 will be the first season with the academy’s squad led by former Penn State assistant Joe Crispin. Air Force will face Patriot League opposition from Army on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in a clash of the service academies. On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, the Roadrunners will get their own opportunity against the Black Knights, with Army coming off an 11-21 finish heading into the fourth season under Kevin Kuwik. This will be UTSA’s third meeting with Army in the last four years.

UTSA closes out opening month on the road, facing SIUE (Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) for the second time in as many seasons on Sunday, Nov. 29, at First Community Arena in the Vadalabene Center. After facing UTSA in early November a year ago, SIUE ended the season at 19-13 and finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference. It will be the second meeting with UTSA in the eighth season under Brian Barone.

A road swing to South Alabama opens UTSA’s December dates, heading to The Mitchell Center on Saturday, Dec. 5, facing a Jaguars squad coming off a 21-12 finish and heading into the ninth season under Richie Riley, who has guided the program to 21-win seasons in the past two years and three of the last five seasons.

On to Dallas on Tuesday, Dec. 8, facing SMU and visiting Moody Coliseum for the first time since 2023-24. The Atlantic Coast Conference-based Mustangs were 20-14 and reached the NCAA tournament as an at-large 11 seed under Andy Enfield, now in his third season as head coach.

After topping the Pioneers last year on the road, UTSA will host now-WCC-based Denver on Friday, Dec. 11. The Pioneers were 15-17 last season and will be in the second year under Tim Bergstraser.

Facing off for the first time since 2020, Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) will head across town to the Convo on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Coming out of the Red River Athletic Conference, the Saints went 16-12 and are heading to the third season under Marcus Thompson.

Closing out the home slate heading into the holiday, UTSA welcomes Huston-Tillotson for the fifth time and first meeting since 2014, bringing the HBCU Athletic Conference opposition from East Austin to town after an 8-13 finish in 2025-26. John A. Smith is leading the Rams in his third season.

The Roadrunners wrap the non-conference slate up north, traveling to Minnesota’s Williams Arena for the third time in program history to face the Golden Gophers on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Niko Medved is in his second season and Big Ten-based UM went 15-18 last year, facing Baylor in the College Basketball Crown.

The 18-game American Conference schedule follows in 2027, opening up at Temple on Saturday, Jan. 2, at The Liacouras Center, running through the league finale on Sunday, March 7 – back at the Convo and also against Temple.

In total, UTSA will play 17 home games in San Antonio at the Convocation Center.

The American Men’s Basketball Championship is set for March 10-14 at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. It will feature the league’s top 10 teams in a five-day bracket format. The No. 1 and 2 seeds will advance directly to the semifinals, while the No. 3 and 4 seeds will receive byes to the quarterfinals. The No. 5 and 6 seeds will receive byes to the second round.
