Womack in fourth, Roadrunners tied for ninth after first day of West Bay Collegiate Invitational

ESTERO, Fla. — Bryce Womack is in fourth place while competing as an individual and UTSA is tied for ninth after the first day of the West Bay Collegiate Invitational, which got underway Monday at West Bay Club (par 72/6,939 yards).

Womack has sole possession of fourth at 6-under-par 138 with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday. The senior transfer opened the event with a 2-under 70 and then followed that with a 4-under 68 in round two. The Alamo Heights High School product is only three shots back of the individual leader, Stetson’s Uy Doan (-9/135).

Womack’s opening round featured five birdies with four coming on the front side of the course, including three in a row on Nos. 6-8. In the afternoon, he wrote down five more birdies and an eagle on the 502-yard, par-5 sixth hole. He has played the par fours at 4-under and the par fives at 6-under through 36 holes.

Meanwhile Cole Pregler and Francisco Solorza are part of a tie for 27th at 1-under 143 to help the Roadrunners settle into a tie with HCU for ninth place with a 1-over 577 (292-285), one shot ahead of Jacksonville and two strokes shy of a tie between Troy and UTRGV.

Pregler made his UTSA debut a memorable one, as the freshman from Fulshear, Texas, fired a 5-under 67 in the first round. He logged four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 5-6, and an eagle on the 398-yard, par-4 ninth hole. He settled for a 76 that featured four more birdies during his afternoon tour of the course.

Solorza also sits at 1-under par through 36 holes, as the Guadalajara, Mexico, native bounced back from a morning 75 with a 4-under 68 in round two. He recorded six birdies, with four on the back, including three consecutive on Nos. 15-17, to help counter a double bogey on No. 13.

Brayden Bare is tied for 38th at 1-over 145, as the fifth-year senior from Waco carded a 75 in the first round followed by a 70 in the afternoon on the strength of four birdies.

Gabriel Derbez and David Martinez round out the UTSA lineup in 58th (76-72—148) and 68th (75-75—150), respectively.

Appalachian State and host Florida Gulf Coast are deadlocked atop the team leaderboard at 18-under, followed by Lipscomb (-17), ULM (-12) and Stetson (-10) in the top five of the 15-team field.

The final round is set for Tuesday.
