ESTERO, Fla. — Bryce Womack finished in a tie for fifth place while playing as an individual and UTSA placed 11th in the team standings at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at West Bay Club (par 72/6,939 yards).
Womack fired a 9-under-par 207 to sew up a three-way share of fifth in the 88-man field. The senior transfer carded a 70-68—138 on Monday before closing with a 3-under 69 today that featured four birdies. He ended up only four shots behind the individual champion, Uy Doan of Stetson (-13).
Teeing off from No. 16 in the shotgun start format, the Alamo Heights High School product wasted little time recording his first birdie of the day with a four on the 512-yard 17th. He then reeled off six straight pars before a four on the 502-yard sixth moved him to 2-under for the day. He then countered a bogey on the 10th with a birdie on the 399-yard, par-4 11th before getting to 3-under by circling his number on the 548-yard, par-5 15th.
Womack registered his third sub-70 scorecard in six rounds this season. He finished the tournament with a team-high 14 birdies and was one of five Roadrunners to log an eagle this week.
Meanwhile, Cole Pregler tied for 27th at 3-under 213 in his UTSA debut. The freshman from Fulshear, Texas, opened the event with a 5-under 67 and then bounced back from a 75 Monday afternoon with a 2-under 70 today. He logged five of his 13 birdies in the final round, including three consecutive on the 18th, first and second holes.
Francisco Solorza was one shot behind his teammate in a tie for 32nd at 2-under 214. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native opened with a 75-68—143 before posting a 1-under 71 in the final round thanks to four birdies and an eagle on the 507-yard, par-5 second.
Gabriel Derbez turned in the low score for the UTSA lineup in the final round with a 3-under 69 that featured seven birdies. The freshman from Monterrey, Mexico, circled his number four times on the front side of the course on his way to the best round of his young collegiate career. He ended up in a tie for 49th with a 1-over 217, as he opened the week with rounds of 76 and 72.
Brayden Bare tied for 61st (75-70-75—220) and David Martinez grabbed a share of 69th (75-75-73—223).
The Roadrunners finished in 11th with a 4-under 860 (292-285-283), six shots ahead of UCF and only four back of 10th-place Jacksonville. Florida Gulf Coast captured the team title with a 33-under 831, followed by Lipscomb (832), Stetson (844), Troy (844) and ULM (844) in the top five.
The Roadrunners will close out the fall campaign on Oct. 19-20 at the Qubein Cup in Greensboro, North Carolina.
