HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Victoria Schuldt posted a 1-under-par scorecard to pace UTSA on day one of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, which teed off Friday at University of Denver Golf Club.
Schuldt’s 71 earned her a share of 11th place after the first round of the 54-hole tournament. The sophomore from Hamburg, Germany, is only two shots out of the top five and four back of the leaders with 36 holes left to play over the next two days.
The Roadrunners are tied with Wyoming for sixth place in the team standings after recording a 2-over 290. UTSA is one stroke ahead of a tie for eighth between Boise State and Texas State, and one shot behind Notre Dame and Xavier, who are knotted for fourth. Tulane has the day-one lead, followed by UNLV and host Denver.
Teeing off from No. 10, Schuldt registered three birdies against one bogey on the back nine. She wrote down two on the 171-yard 13th and then countered a bogey on No. 14 with a birdie on the 154-yard, par-3 17th before closing out a 34 with a four on the 486-yard 18th. She logged eight birdies and only one bogey on the front en route to her fourth par-or-better scorecard in seven rounds this season.
Lydia Lin and Yiwei Zhao both turned in an even-par 72 to settle into a tie for 20th. Lin, a transfer from Northern Arizona, had three birdies to negate a trio of bogeys while posting her fourth par-or-better round in as many tries this fall. Zhao, a freshman from China, was steady with 16 pars and a birdie on No. 18, notching her third par-or-better score of the campaign.
Lauren Rios provided the other counting score with a 75 that featured a pair of birdies. The fifth-year senior has a share of 45th.
Kayla Black rounds out the lineup in a tie for 55th (76), while Maria Bastarrica is tied for 79th (80) while playing as an individual.
The second round is slated for Saturday.
