Vargas wins American Individual Championships singles title

HOUSTON – Junior Enzo Vargas won the men’s singles title at the American Individual Championships on Sunday at the George R. Brown Convention Center, while representing the UTSA men’s tennis team.

“I was confident I could play my best tennis here,” Vargas said. “Coming in, I wanted to play six matches in a row, and I did. I found a way and just kept going. My mindset was always there, and I got the championship.”

A 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 4 seed Victor Tosetto of Tulsa in the title bout allowed Vargas to lift the trophy and punch his ticket to the ITA Conference Masters Championships, which spans Nov. 5-8, in Rome, Georgia.

“It was an incredible week for Enzo,” Head UTSA Men’s Tennis Coach Nick Castro said. “Every match here is super tough, and the competition is very high, but he showed he could compete at the highest level with the best in the conference. He’s done a phenomenal job competing in every match and finding ways to win. He took small details along the way that helped him improve with each match, building a consistent, solid game. All that hard work paid off in the semis and in the finals. He played his most complete match on the final day, and I’m so proud of him and of our program.”

Vargas is UTSA’s first-ever champion at the event, and he’s the second Roadrunner to play in the final at the American Individual Championships, following Danijal Muminovic in 2024.

He started off the tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Hirro Sakamoto of Charlotte, ahead of a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 come-from-behind victory over No. 6 seed Rafael Botran of Rice in the round of 16 on Thursday.

On Friday, Vargas downed Alex Santino Nunez Vera of Tulsa, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the semifinals, and a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 2 seed Daniel Philips of Tulane on Saturday sent him to the title match.
