Former Roadrunner Spears selected in NBA G League Draft

SAN ANTONIO – Former UTSA men’s basketball guard Primo Spears has been selected in the 2026 NBA G League Draft by the Westchester Knicks, making him the first Roadrunner picked in the league’s draft event.

Finishing his collegiate career for the Roadrunners in 2024-25 after transferring from Florida State, Spears was chosen in the G League’s first round with the 25th selection by the New York Knicks affiliate in White Plains, New York. Spears was a 2024-25 American All-Conference Second Team honoree, the first all-conference player for UTSA in the American era and first for the Roadrunners since 2020-21.

A combo guard from Hartford, Connecticut, in head coach Austin Claunch’s first signing class, Spears started 30 games for the Roadrunners, leading the team in scoring, ranking second in the American and 25th in the nation with a 19.8 ppg average. Accumulating the ninth-most single-season points in UTSA history, Spears put away 593 points on 39.8 percent shooting, 63 three-pointers and an American fourth-best 84.4 percent at the free throw line. Spears was seventh in the league with 4.0 assists per game and a team-high 120 dimes.

After finishing up at UTSA, Spears played for the Ostioneros de Guaymas in the Mexican Basketball League CIBACOPA during the 2025-26 season, averaging 17.0 points, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals over 34.0 minutes in 34 games played (29 starts).
