GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guided by top-three finishes from Cole Pregler and Gabriel Derbez, UTSA finished second at the Qubein Cup on Tuesday at Sedgefield Country Club.
Pregler and Derbez each finished as part of a three-way tie for third place at 1-over-par 211 on the 6,953-yard, par-70 layout to help the Roadrunners claim runner-up honors at the 54-hole event.
UTSA recorded an 864 (290-288-286) to place second, five strokes ahead of UNC Wilmington and 14 back of No. 49 Chattanooga. Loyola Maryland (872) and Troy (874) rounded out the top five in the 11-team field.
Pregler opened the week with a 2-under 68 on Monday morning and then bounced back from a 73 in round two with an even-par 70 that featured birdies on the 439-yard, par-4 second and the 523-yard, par-5 fifth holes. The freshman from Fulshear, Texas, finished the event with eight birdies and an eagle, and he played the par fives at 5-under en route to the top finish of his young UTSA career.
Derbez also notched his top collegiate finish by logging back-to-back red numbers after an opening-round 74. The freshman from Monterrey, Texas, fired a 2-under 68 in the second round, which was suspended Monday due to darkness and resumed Tuesday morning. He then closed with a 69 that was headlined by four birdies, including three on a four-hole stretch on the back nine. He logged a team-high 11 birdies — the second-best total in the field — and played the par fives at 4-under.
Pregler and Derbez ended up five shots off the pace set by Chattanooga’s Ward Harris, who carded a 4-under 206 (69-70-67) while playing as an individual.
Brayden Bare tied for 34th with a 224 (73-73-78), while Bryce Womack (75-74-77—226) and Francisco Solorza (80-76-70) tied for 41st. Saad Malik finished in a tie for 67th (84-79-73—236) while competing as an individual.
The Roadrunners will return to action Feb. 7-9 when they travel to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, for the Compadres Collegiate.
