Pregler paces Roadrunners on day one of Qubein Cup

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Cole Pregler has a share of third place and UTSA is in second after day one of the Qubein Cup, which got underway off Monday at Sedgefield Country Club.

The first round was completed, but round two was suspended due to darkness with most of the field having three holes left. Play will resume at 7 a.m. CT Tuesday followed by a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. CT for the final round. Live coverage of No. 18 during the final round will air on ESPN+.

Pregler fired a 2-under-par 68 in the opening round thanks to a trio of birdies and an eagle. Teeing off No. 8, he bounced back from a pair of bogeys with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15-16. The freshman from Fulshear, Texas, then dipped to 1-underpar with a three on the 420-yard, par-4 first before registering an eagle on the 523-yard, par-5 fifth. He settled for a bogey on No. 6 and closed out his round with a par on the seventh.

Pregler is tied for third with three other players at even par, as he currently sits at 2-over with two holes left to play in round two. He has birdied three of his last four holes with Nos. 6-7 left to play in the morning, and he stands only two shots off the pace of the co-leaders, Ethan Anderson of James Madison and Evan Rogers of Chattanooga.

The Roadrunners have sole possession of second place in the 11-team field, five shots behind day-one leader and 49th-ranked Chattanooga and six strokes ahead of third-place Troy.

Gabriel Derbez is two shots behind Pregler in a tie for ninth at 2-over par. The freshman from Monterrey, Mexico, opened his day with a 74 that included three birdies before making his move up the individual leaderboard in the afternoon. He has completed his second round, posting a 2-under 68 to match Pregler with UTSA’s low score of the day. He logged four birdies in the round, two on each side of the course.

Brayden Bare also has made it through 36 holes, as the fifth-year senior from Waco has a share of 23rd at 6-over. He registered a 73 in the morning behind a pair of birdies and then posted another 73 on the strength of three more circled numbers in the afternoon.

Bryce Womack currently is in a tie for 26th at 7-over par. The senior from San Antonio opened with a 75 and currently sits 2-over for round two with two holes remaining after already logging four birdies in the round.

Francisco Solorza is in 64th with two holes left in the second round, while Saad Malik is in 71st with one hole to go in round two while playing as an individual.
