IRVING, Texas – In back-to-back weeks, a UTSA soccer player has been named for a major weekly award, and the third time this season, as officials from the league office announced on Monday that Leah Varela has been named American Conference Midfielder of the Week.
Following up Sofia Peters as last week’s Defensive Player of the Week, Varela earns her second Midfielder of the Week honor, previously on Sept. 14. The Rio Rancho, New Mexico redshirt sophomore played the full 90 against Tulsa and delivered the game-tying penalty kick, finding the right corner despite the keeper guessing correctly. Varela notched two shots with both on goal, and helped the UTSA effort to keep a scoreless run of play and a UTSA 1-1 draw with the Golden Hurricane.
Varela and the Roadrunners have a big week of action ahead, traveling to league-leading Memphis in the first meeting since UTSA advanced past the Tigers in last year’s American semifinal, followed on Sunday with Senior Day against Temple at the Park West Athletics Complex.
