UTSA Athletics celebrates grand opening of Basketball & Volleyball Training Center

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Athletics celebrated the grand opening of the 53,048-square-foot, state-of-the-art Basketball & Volleyball Training Center (BVTC) on Wednesday with a press conference, ribbon cutting ceremony, and tours for guests and media.

The facility, which was completed at a cost of more than $35 million, is located next to the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE) on Barshop Boulevard and now houses the daily operations of the UTSA volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs.

“I am grateful for this special moment in the trajectory of our intercollegiate athletics enterprise. This state-of-the-art practice facility is essential to our aspirations for our women’s and men’s basketball and volleyball programs,” UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy said. “Today, we are so fortunate to recognize our essential partnerships with the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, and the generosity of our many wonderful donors in making this facility a reality. We have more work to do across the enterprise, but this day is a special day, and I am deeply appreciative of the leadership of Dr. Lisa Campos, Senior Executive Vice President Andrea Marks and their teams for making days like today possible.”

The BVTC features two full-sized NCAA practice courts, locker rooms and a team lounge for each program, a weight room, an athletic training space that includes hydrotherapy and hyperbaric chambers, team meeting rooms and coaches’ offices for each of the three programs. The enhanced technology in the training room will be available to all student-athletes, benefiting nearly 400 student-athletes.

Multiple spaces have been named in recognition of generous donors, including:

"The Basketball & Volleyball Training Center is a difference-maker for our basketball and volleyball students-athletes, who now have 24-hour access to practice courts in addition to state-of-the-art locker rooms, team lounges and strength and conditioning facilities," UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. "I want to thank Dr. Eighmy, the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, and the many donors who have come together to support making this facility a reality."

The BVTC was built in partnership with Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, each investing $5 million in the project through funding agreements similar to those for RACE and the Park West Fieldhouse.

Construction began on the BVTC in April 2025. The structure was completed in October 2025 with power and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) coming online in April 2026.

Populous served as the project’s architect, and Skanska USA Inc. was the construction firm.
