LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Victoria Schuldt has a share of the lead and UTSA is tied for second after round one of the Golf Iconic Classic, which teed off Monday at New Mexico State Golf Course (par 72/6,420 yards).
Schuldt fired a 5-under-par 67 to match her collegiate-best round and earn a share of first place with Fresno State’s Lara Goerlich atop the 104-player leaderboard. The sophomore from Hamburg, Germany, wrote down six birdies against only one bogey in building a two-shot lead ahead of a trio of golfers who share third place at 3-under par.
Behind Schuldt’s red number, the Roadrunners are tied with Fresno State for second place in the team standings at 6-under 282, only one shot behind Nebraska and one stroke ahead of UTEP. San Diego State is in fifth (-2) in the 19-team field. The 282 marked UTSA’s fourth par-or-better team round of the fall campaign.
Teeing off from No. 7 in the shotgun start format, Schuldt wasted little time recording her first birdie of the day with a four on the 488-yard eighth. She then dipped to 3-under following birdies on the 373-yard, par-4 10th and 496-yard, par-5 12th holes. Following her only bogey of the day on No. 13, she posted a two on the 150-yard 17th to move back to 3-under before notching back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4 en route to turning in a 5-under-par scorecard for the third time as a collegian.
Yiwei Zhao has grabbed a share of 10th place after registering a 1-under 71. The freshman from China logged four birdies on the day to help her equal her season-best round, which she has done twice previously this fall.
Lydia Lin and Lauren Rios are part of a tie for 21st at even par. Lin, a transfer from China, carded three birdies over a five-hole stretch on the front nine, while Rios, a fifth-year senior from Coppell, Texas, recorded four birdies en route to her fourth par-or-better round of the campaign.
Miah Wanserski rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 55th after posting a 76.
The second round is scheduled for Tuesday.
