TROPHY CLUB, Texas — Victoria Schuldt has a share of the individual lead and the UTSA women’s golf is in second place after the first day of The Bruzzy, which teed off Tuesday at Trophy Club Country Club.
Schuldt celebrated her birthday by carding a 4-under-par 68 followed by a 5-under 67 that featured two eagles to give her the school record for low 36-hole total of 9-under 135. The sophomore from Hamburg, Germany, is knotted with Xavier’s Isabel Brozena atop the leaderboard with 18 holes remaining on Wednesday.
Behind Schuldt’s record-setting day, the Roadrunners registered the second-best 36-hole team total in program history with a 15-under 561, just shy of the standard of 19-under 557 posted at the 2023 Sam Golden Invitational.
UTSA is in sole possession of second place in the team standings, only four shots behind Oklahoma (557) and three strokes ahead of Texas A&M (564). The Roadrunners also have a lead on Texas Tech (566), Illinois (567), Nebraska (567), Xavier (567), North Texas (575), BYU (579), Texas State (586) and ULM (594).
Schuldt’s opening round featured four birdies. Teeing off from No. 14 in the shotgun start, she wrote down a four on the 530-yard par-5 and then birdied the 396-yard, par-4 16th to get to 2-under for the day. She tacked on back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5 en route to closing out her 4-under 68 in the morning.
In the second round, Schuldt reeled off nine consecutive pars before logging the first of two eagles during her second tour of the course. She recorded a three on the 559-yard, par-5 fifth to move to 6-under and then followed that with a birdie on the sixth before settling for her only bogey of the day on No. 7. Her second eagle came on the 496-yard, par-5 10th, while she wrote down her sixth birdie of the day on the 12th to get to 9-under and earn a share of the lead entering the final round.
Lydia Lin is two shots behind her teammate in sole possession of fifth place at 7-under 137 after a strong UTSA debut on Tuesday. The sophomore transfer from Northern Arizona posted the team’s low round in the morning with a 5-under 67 that was highlighted by six birdies, including five on the front nine where she carded a 31. A native of China, she used five birdies in the afternoon to card a 2-under 70 and put herself in contention for the crown. Her 11 birdies are the second-best total in the field through 36 holes.
Lauren Rios is in a tie for 27th at even-par 144. The fifth-year senior from nearby Coppell High School bounced back from a 75 in the first round with a 3-under 69 that was headlined by five birdies. Three of those circled numbers came as part of a 33 on the front, including back-to-back on Nos. 6-7.
Yiwei Zhao has a share of 34th at 1-over 145. The freshman from China posted an even-par 72 on the strength of a pair of birdies in the first round and then added three more birdies to her tally en route to a 73 in the afternoon.
Maria Bastarrica (76-77—153) and Miah Wanserski (74-79—153), who is competing as an individual, are part of a tie for 55th.
The final round is scheduled for Wednesday.
