MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — David Martinez fired a 5-under-par 67 on Monday to move into second place, while UTSA is in fifth following the second round of the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate at Grande Dunes Resort Club.
Martinez turned in his second straight sub-70 round in logging the best score versus par of his collegiate career, leaping from a tie for sixth place into sole possession of second place at 9-under 135. With 18 holes remaining on Tuesday, the junior from Houston sits only one shot back of the 36-hole leader, Coastal Carolina’s Jack Lee, who is 10-under par (66-68—134). Martinez’s 36-hole total is tied for the second-best score versus par through two rounds in program history, only one shot off the program record.
In the team race, the Roadrunners are in fifth with a 6-under 570 (277-293), three shots behind Campbell and one stroke ahead of a tie for sixth between Kennesaw State and Stetson. Coastal Carolina (557) leads the 16-team field, followed by Elon (558) and Lipscomb (559).
Martinez opened the 54-hole event with a 4-under 68 on Sunday before posting his 67 today on the strength of five birdies. He started the day with a three on the 452-yard, par-4 first and then dipped to 2-under par with a four on the 566-yard fourth. He notched his third birdie of the day with a three No. 12 before going back-to-back on Nos. 16-17 to get to 5-under. He leads all players with only one bogey through 36 holes, while his 10 birdies stand 11th so far.
Francisco Solorza is the next-highest Roadrunner, as the Guadalajara, Mexico, native has a share of 31st at even par 144. After opening with a 1-under 71, he carded a 73 that was highlighted by birdies on the 209-yard, par-3 second and the 571-yard, par-5 seventh holes.
Brayden Bare is tied for 38th with a 2-over 146 (70-76), while Bryce Womack and Gabriel Derbez round out the UTSA lineup in 48th (68-79—147) and 59th (71-77—148), respectively.
The final round is set for Tuesday.
