HOUSTON – The Roadrunners made their first trip of the fall over the weekend, visiting Rice’s Fall Invitational from George R. Brown Tennis Center. The field consisted of 10 teams, including seven from Texas. Singles action wrapped up on Sunday, with Celine Absawi headlining the action in a consolation finals victory in Flight 2.
On Saturday, doubles play concluded as Gabriela Felix da Silva and Katsiaryna Dubik made up UTSA’s top pairing. The duo prevailed in the Flight 1 consolation finals bout by a 6-1 mark over Sam Houston. Meanwhile, Aoka Nagasawi and Celine Absawi took home one victory across three doubles contests in Flight 2.
Absawi dropped her opening matchup in Flight 2 of singles play before taking down representatives from LA Tech (6-3, 6-3) and UTRGV (6-0, 1-6, 7-6 [10-5 tiebreaker]). The sophomore sealed a consolation title as the Roadrunners’ top member in singles.
Two Roadrunners – Katsiaryna Dubik and Laia Tarazona Peyro – bowed out in the semifinals of Flight 4. In Flight 6, Aoka Nagasawa made her way to the title match with wins over Sam Houston (7-6 [10-5 tiebreaker], 2-0 [retired]) and UTRGV (6-4, 6-1).
