AURORA, Ontario — Playing near her hometown of Mississauga, Ontario, Kayla Black tied for 44th place to lead UTSA to 10th at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Beacon Hall Golf Club.
Facing a tough layout that saw an average score of 77.75 for the week, Black moved up two spots on the final day of the 54-hole tournament. The sophomore grabbed a share of 44th with a 236 to help guide the Roadrunners to 10th in the team standings with a 962 (334-312-316), one shot ahead of the University of British Columbia and just behind ninth-place UNC Wilmington.
After opening the event with an 83-76—159 on Monday, Black carded a 77 in the final round on the strength of three birdies. Starting on No. 11, she wrote down a four on the 468-yard, par-5 12th and a two on the 170-yard, par-3 14th to get to 2-under for the day. She closed out the week with a birdie on the 503-yard, par-5 10th on her way to a top-50 finish.
Lauren Rios was two shots behind Black in sole possession of 48th with a 238 (83-79-76). The fifth-year senior from Coppell, Texas, saved her best round for the final day with a 76 that paced the Roadrunners.
Miah Wanserski earned a share of 54th with a 247 (82-82-83) in her UTSA debut, while Maria Bastarrica and Victoria Schuldt rounded out the lineup in 57th (86-84-80—250) and 58th (93-75-84—252), respectively.
Virginia won the team crown with an 865 behind individual medalist Jaclyn LaHa (-5), followed by Auburn (882), UCLA (891), Tennessee (892) and Kent State (898) in the top five.
The Roadrunners will return to the course Oct. 2-4 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
