AURORA, Ontario — UTSA is in 11th place after 36 holes of the Canadian Collegiate Invitational, which got underway Monday at Beacon Hall Golf Club.
Led by Kayla Black, who is from nearby Mississauga and has a share of 46th place, the Roadrunners registered a 646 (334-312) and are only five shots out of the top 10 in the team standings.
With the 6,290-yard, par-72 layout playing out to an average score of 78.15 on the opening day, Black began the 54-hole event with an 83 and then posted a seven-shot improvement in round two with a 76. The sophomore logged birdies on the 343-yard, par-4 second and 397-yard, par-4 fifth holes to help her move into the top 50 with 18 holes left to play Tuesday.
Lauren Rios is one shot behind Black in sole possession of 51st. The fifth-year senior from Coppell High School had an 83 in the morning before recording a 79 that featured a birdie on the 379-yard, par-4 17th in the second round.
Miah Wanserski is in a tie for 54th, one stroke behind Rios. The freshman from Downers Grove, Illinois, posted a pair of 82s on the strength of two birdies on the day.
Victoria Schuldt is in 57th (93-75—168) and Maria Bastarrica is tied for 58th (86-84—170) to close out the UTSA lineup.
Virginia has the lead with a 567 (286-281) behind individual leader Jaclyn LaHa (-6), followed by Tennessee (587), Auburn (592), Kent State (595) and UCLA (596) in the top five.
The final round is slated for an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday.
