DURHAM, N.C. — Sam Acharya posted a 1-under-par scorecard to guide UTSA on day one of the Rod Myers Invitational, which teed off Monday at Duke University Golf Club.
Acharya fired a 71 in the first round and is 1-over par through six holes of the second round, which was suspended due to lightning Monday evening. Play will resume at 8:30 a.m. CT Tuesday and the previously scheduled third round will not be contested.
Teeing off from No. 17 in the shotgun start format, Acharya recorded 11 pars against only one bogey over his first 12 holes. The second-year player from Nepal then logged back-to-back birdies to move into the red, writing down a four on the 573-yard 11th and a two on the 181-yard 12th. He finished the round with four more pars en route to the best scorecard of the day for the Roadrunners, who are in 13th in the team standings.
Acharya has five pars and a bogey through six holes in round two and sits in a tie for 27th at even par.
Brayden Bare is tied for 57th at 4-over par. The Waco native posted a 1-over 73 in the opening round on the strength of birdies on the 493-yard, par-5 ninth and the 455-yard, par-4 18th holes. He has added another birdie to his tally over his first seven holes of round two.
David Martinez is one shot behind Bare in a tie for 63rd at 5-over par. The Houston Memorial High School product registered four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos 5-6, in turning in a 73 in the first round. He is midway through the second round with two more birdies under his belt.
Gabriel Derbez is tied for 69th (+7) and Francisco Solorza is 7th (+8) to round out the UTSA lineup.
UNC Greensboro sits atop the team leaderboard at 18-under par, followed by UNC Wilmington (-13), Harvard (-12), Xavier (-10) and host Duke (-7) in the top five.
Vijay Powell of George Mason has the individual lead at 9-under par.
