SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s golf coach Matt Wernecke announced Monday that Joey Ashley has been promoted to the program’s associate coach after spending the past five seasons as assistant coach.
"Coach Ashley has been a vital part of our program’s growth and improvement over the past four to five years,” Wernecke said. “He truly cares about the development of our student-athletes as young men and as players. We are fortunate to have Coach Ashley representing the men's golf program and UTSA Athletics as a whole. This promotion is well deserved."
A coaching veteran for more than a decade in the high school and collegiate ranks, During his time in San Antonio, the Roadrunners have registered 37 top-10 finishes, including the 2026 Military City Collegiate team title, one individual victory and three all-conference performers.
Off the course, UTSA has been recognized as a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Academic Team in each of Ashley’s five seasons on the coaching staff. Individually, Roadrunners have combined to collect 10 GCAA All-America Scholar awards, three College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team selections and 17 conference all-academic team certificates.
The Roadrunners will tee off the season Sept. 6-8 when they travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate, which will be hosted by Coastal Carolina at Grande Dunes Golf Club.
