About the Roadrunners
After opening the season with a pair of draws against a South Texas rival in Texas State and an elite Big 12 squad in sixth-ranked TCU, UTSA put offense squarely in the crosshairs against visiting Colorado College. The Roadrunners went right to work on the season’s first victory, responding in the 12th minute with an Ava Jackson putback after seeing their first goal in the fourth minute challenged away via replay. UTSA controlled the tempo and got the insurance goal off a header from Sadie Paul in the 57th minute to put the Tigers away in the 2-0 win. Meanwhile, the defense held CC to just six shots and only a single on-goal attempt for the first clean sheet of the season.
The reigning American Conference Champions, UTSA is averaging 11.3 shots per game on a .412 on-goal percentage and netting 2.0 goals per game. Defensively, it’s a 1.33 goals-against-average and .692 save percentage heading into the matchup with the Rattlers. Pacing the UTSA offense, the redshirt sophomore forward Jackson has five points via two goals and an assist, scoring in each of the past two games. Four other Roadrunners have scored a goal (Brooklyn Bailey, Sadie Paul, Dulci Binns and Aaliyaiah Durden), while redshirt sophomore midfielder Leah Varela tops UTSA with two assists.
About the St. Mary’s Rattlers
The Rattlers are wrapping up their exhibition slate on Sunday in the sixth season under Kevin Driggs. An NCAA Division II Tournament team in two of the past four seasons, St. Mary’s finished last season at 9-6-3 in the deeply competitive Lone Star Conference.
In 2025, the Rattlers averaged 1.89 goals on 15.1 shots per game last season, allowing a 1.27 GAA with a .775 save percentage. However, St. Mary’s is returning just 11 active players from last year’s squad. Highlighting the returners, LSC Offensive Player to Watch, senior forward Elena Kössler led the team and was 2025 LSC Forward and Newcomer of the Year after scoring a team-high, conference-second 13 goals while shooting .506 SOG%, in addition to a team-best six assists. An LSC Defensive Player to Watch, sophomore Marily Garza Contreras added two goals and three assists last year for the Rattlers.
Series history
Despite a solid history of facing each other as exhibition foes, the Roadrunners and Rattlers are meeting in the regular season for only the third time in the series, playing each of the last two seasons. These teams met for the first time on Aug. 25, 2024, at Park West and won last year’s August 21 matchup with a 3-0 advantage on goals scored by Durden (33’) and Bailey (66’), with a late StMU own-goal (73’).
UP NEXT: Next week, UTSA will host Texas Southern on Thursday, Aug. 27, before traveling to Commerce for the first time since 2022, taking on a road matchup at East Texas A&M on Sunday, Sept. 3.
