Jonah Goldberg named UTSA Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos announced today that Jonah Goldberg has been named Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications.

A seasoned veteran within intercollegiate athletics communications and within the University of Texas System, Goldberg joins the Roadrunners following a 15-year run at UT Rio Grande Valley, including the last four years as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications & Championships, following two years as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications for the Vaqueros.

“We’re really excited to welcome Jonah as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications,” Campos said. “He brings extensive experience within the UT System, strong relationships across the region and a proven track record of elevating an athletics brand after doing tremendous work to raise UTRGV’s profile exponentially in recent years. Jonah has a broad background across all facets of external communications, and we’re thrilled to add that experience to our leadership team.”

“I am excited to be joining the incredible team at UTSA,” Goldberg said. “There are not many institutions in the country experiencing the type of growth in both academics and athletics that can be found at UTSA and certainly the university's impact on San Antonio is unmatched. I want to thank Dr. Lisa Campos for having faith in me to execute the department and university's vision at a high level and I look forward to validating that faith every day.”

Serving as the chair of the Southland Conference Communicators for the last two years, in his role at UTRGV Goldberg oversaw leadership, administration and organization of the department’s media relations and broadcasting efforts – carrying the role of primary communications contact for football and baseball after covering 11 other sports during his time in Edinburg. Goldberg was also in charge of coordinating with the conference, athletics staff and host facilities to ensure the success of six conference championships hosted by UTRGV, formulating bids to secure further championship hosting opportunities. Goldberg successfully spearheaded four Western Athletic Conference championships and one apiece for the Southland and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

At the forefront of not only UTRGV’s institutional rebranding from the athletics side, but also the program’s immense growth in recognition in recent years and the publicity surrounding opening the doors on a new football program, Goldberg leveraged strong relationships with local, regional and national media outlets to maximize the coverage, generating over $6 billion of advertising value equivalency through his team’s collaborative work with marketing. Included in the Vaqueros’ national recognition were appearances in USA Today, Sports Illustrated and The Washington Post.

Goldberg was instrumental in modernizing UTRGV’s broadcast standard, overseeing a dramatic increase in production quality that led to ESPN+ coverage for every ticketed team sports home game for the past 10 years. Goldberg made history for the Vaqueros prior to the 2015-16 academic year, as he successfully negotiated an agreement with Spectrum Sports to carry all UTRGV men’s and women’s basketball and baseball home games on the channel in the department’s first regional television package. Goldberg also brought national TV to the Rio Grande Valley, partnering with American Sports Network for three baseball games in 2015-16 and then expanding that agreement for four men’s basketball games, one women’s basketball game and eight baseball games in 2016-17. He went on to add contracts with Comcast SportsNet Houston and Spectrum to air the department's weekly program, serving as the host and executive producer while shooting stories as well.

Goldberg brought UTRGV athletics back to the radio after a five-year hiatus in a partnership with Rio Grande Valley Public Radio 88 FM, hosting the men’s and women’s basketball coaches shows on the radio in addition to a 16-year run as the department’s play-by-play announcer and executive producer of the broadcasts for baseball, volleyball, men's and women's basketball and soccer. Goldberg also served as the host of the numerous UTRGV coaches shows and athletics specials.

Goldberg took up his latest stint at the university after spending three years as the Director of Communications with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (NBA G-League) and five years as the Director of Communications with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (United League Baseball). With those teams, Goldberg‘s responsibilities included public relations and marketing, in addition to play-by-play responsibilities. He also offered color commentary for the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (Central Hockey League) and served as a sideline reporter for the Rio Grande Valley Dorados (af2).

Goldberg grew up in New York and graduated from Boston University's College of Communication in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. He was on the broadcast journalism track and also completed a concentration in political science, leveraging his four years working at WTBU, BU's student-run radio station, into a sports director role after becoming the voice of WTBU's game coverage for eight different sports – as part of a record 248 broadcasts at WTBU. Goldberg earned his Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration at UTRGV in 2023 and his Master of Business Administration at UTRGV in 2019.

He was selected in 2024-25 to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Senior Administrators Mentoring Institute and has garnered numerous awards from College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), UTRGV as an institution, National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, Sportscasters Talent Agency of America, United League Baseball and the San Angelo Standard Times.
