Still Undefeated: New book traces birth of UTSA Football

SAN ANTONIO — Former UTSA Athletics staff members Brad Parrott and Jim Goodman have co-authored a book titled “Still Undefeated: How UTSA Football Went From Forbidden to Significant.” The book is available for purchase via Amazon Books and — and every copy sold supports the program it celebrates.

The new book traces the birth of the UTSA Football program, pulling back the curtain on how it happened:  the business leaders and politicians who bought into a shared vision and the relationships that developed far from football’s bright lights to provide fun, affordable entertainment for a university and a community.

Parrott and Goodman came together to work with former UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey, NCAA national champion head coach Larry Coker, San Antonio community leaders and UTSA personnel to create a football program now revered throughout the nation.

Parrott and Goodman string together first-hand accounts from the people who lived through the birth of the UTSA football program, delivering a read that's as entertaining and often funny as it is inspiring.

Book proceeds go directly to support UTSA Football.

Praise for Still Undefeated

"Football is woven into the fabric of Texas. It's as much a part of the state's history and way of life as spurs, barbecue and pump jacks. I've witnessed its impact throughout political, academic and business careers. Chapter after chapter, this book tells why and how UTSA football made its way from unthinkable to the Alamodome and into the soul of San Antonio."
John T. Montford
Former Texas Senate member and AT&T and GM executive

"The struggle to bring football to UTSA and its rapid rise to the top level of NCAA competition is an amazing story. From the time I was announced as the first head coach until the record-setting inaugural game were some of the best days of my career. I hope this book brings back great memories for Roadrunner fans and the city of San Antonio."
Larry Coker
Former University of Miami and UTSA head football coach

"This book details the can-do spirit of those who created UTSA football. Their determination inspired FOX Southwest to produce a six-part television series, The Birth of a Program. This enjoyable read details why Roadrunner football was born and what it has provided to students, alumni and the San Antonio community."
Jon Heidtke
Former FOX Southwest senior vice president and general manager

"When I was a golfer at UTSA in the late '90s, our athletics program drew very little attention, even from the local media. I remember going on my recruiting trip, and there was a T-shirt that read, 'UTSA Football Still Undefeated.' It was a joke at the time but also a bit sad that we didn't have a team. Now, as I work at the SEC Network and ESPN Radio, there is seldom a day that I don't hear something about the Roadrunners. It's amazing what a dream and the right leadership launching big-time college football has done for that university."
Peter Burns
SEC Network and ESPN Radio host

"A client coaxed me into the UTSA football saga shortly after Larry Coker was hired. We made trips to universities looking at how other start-ups and established programs operate. As I heard more from those beginning the program, I became a believer. This book tells how they overcame obstacles even bigger than the transfer portal and NIL."
