Guzman garners NACAC shot put title

APIZACO, MEXICO – Over the weekend in Mexico, redshirt freshman UTSA track & field thrower David Guzman added a title to his stockpile of international accomplishments, coming away from the 2026 North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) U23 Championships as the shot put champion.

Prior to redshirting with the Roadrunners in 2026, Guzman earned a pair of NCAA Division II All-America accolades as a rookie at Texas A&M-Kingsville, earning seventh place in the shot put (17.73m/58-2) and ninth place in discus (54.12m/177-7) at the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.

Originally from Querataro, Mexico, and a graduate of COBAQ 13 Desarrollo Académico Deportivo (DAD), Guzman previously won the 2023 Mexican U20 Championships in Mexico City, topping the shot put with a 17.35m toss, while also earning national silver in the discus on a 52.91m measurement. He registered a pair of bronze-medal performances at last year’s Mexican National Championships, going on to claim the 2026 Mexican U23 Championship in Guadalajara and place second at the all-class 2026 Mexican Championships this June in Ciudad Victoria with a career-best shot put of 18.52m (60-9.25) – which would reach third on UTSA’s all-time performances and would have been the second-best performance in the American Conference this season.

On Sunday, while representing Mexico at Estadio Una Nueva Historia in Apizaco, Guzman claimed the U23 championship on his last attempt of the finals, tossing 18.02m (59-1.5) to surpass Florida State ACC Champion (Jamaica) on the final throw by 0.69m.
