UTSA Women’s Basketball recognized by City Council of the City of San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Members of the City Council of the City of San Antonio on Thursday issued a special recognition, commemorating the success of the 2025-26 UTSA Women’s Basketball team, which on March 14, 2026, beat No. 1 seed Rice 54-40, securing the 2026 American Women’s Basketball Championship.

UTSA was the only team across all levels of the NCAA to beat its conference’s top three seeds en route to the title, with senior Cheyenne Rowe leading the way as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Classmate Ereauna Hardaway and junior Idara Udo were also recognized as All-Tournament Performers.

The proclamation was made by Councilman Marc Whyte (D10) and Councilwoman Ivalis Gonzalez (D8), and was signed by Mayor of San Antonio, Gina Ortiz Jones.

UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos, Associate Vice President for Community & Government Relations Albert Carrisalez and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Karen Aston represented UTSA, along with student-athletes from the 2025-26 women’s basketball team and members of the UTSA Athletics staff.

The proclamation reads:

The Members of the City Council of the City of San Antonio proudly recognize the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Women's Basketball Team for an extraordinary 2025-2026 season and for capturing the 2026 American Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, bringing pride and distinction to UTSA and the City of San Antonio.

As the tournament's sixth seed, the Roadrunners demonstrated exceptional determination and teamwork by winning four games in four days to claim the conference title. Their championship run marked the first conference championship for UTSA Women's Basketball since 2009 and the third in program history. In a historic achievement, the Roadrunners defeated the conference's top three seeds en route to the title while allowing only 46.5 points per game throughout the tournament.

The success of the team was reflected in the outstanding performances of its student athletes. Senior Cheyenne Rowe was named Most Outstanding Player of the American Athletic Conference Tournament, averaging 16.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while senior Ereauna Hardaway and junior Idara Udo earned All-Tournament honors for their contributions to the championship effort.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Karen Aston, the Roadrunners earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, marking the program's third appearance and its first since 2009. Aston also became the 15th coach in NCAA Division I history to lead three different programs to the tournament. The team's success extended to a third consecutive national postseason appearance, another milestone in program history.

The Members of the City Council of the City of San Antonio extend their sincere congratulations to the VISA Women's Basketball Team, coaching staff, and student-athletes for their outstanding accomplishments.
