SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s basketball team has announced another spring signing heading into the third season under head coach Austin Claunch. The Roadrunners released the announcement on Wednesday of the signing of Texas-native transfer guard Shey Eberwein.
A 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard originally from The Woodlands, Texas and The Woodlands High School, Eberwein returns to the Lone Star State after playing two seasons at the University of South Dakota. Appearing in 44 games for the Coyotes with six starts in 13 games in 2025-26, Eberwein averaged 18.8 minutes with 7.7 points on 45.5 percent field goal shooting last season, grabbing 1.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per outing. Across his entire tenure at USD, he averaged 5.4 ppg with 1.7 rpg and 1.2 apg, while shooting 41.5 percent overall.
“UTSA is getting a dynamic two-way guard in Shey Eberwein,” Claunch said. “Shey brings elite athleticism, toughness and versatility to our program. He has the ability to create off the bounce, make plays for others and impacts the game on the defensive end with his energy and competitiveness. His motor, winning mindset and commitment to both ends of the floor make him a perfect fit for the culture we are building at UTSA.”
Playing his prep ball for The Woodlands, Eberwein was named to the 2023 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) 6A All-State team in addition to earning The Courier of Montgomery County Player of the Year, District 13-6A MVP and Offensive MVP as a senior. In his final high school campaign, he logged 21.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.0 bpg, while shooting 45 percent from the field. A two-time all-district selection, Eberwein was named the Highlanders’ MaxPreps Player of the Year after leading the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks his senior year – also earning a finalist spot for the Guy V. Lewis Award. Eberwein ranks No. 2 on the TWHS all-time scorers list with 1,708 career points, holding three school records for single-game scoring (44), district single-game scoring (44) and free throw attempts (247). He played his club hoops for Texas Impact 4:13 UAA.
