FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The UTSA women’s track & field team closed up competition on Saturday at John McDonnell Field, wrapping up the NCAA West First Round. The Roadrunners 4x400-meter relay finished out the competition just short of qualification but walking away with a new program record for the second competition in a row.
As the meet’s final event, the 4x400m relay was delayed mid-stream by over an hour due to a lightning delay, but the quartet of Selma Ims, Fatoumata Kabo, Ida Breigan and Shadae Findley came out ready to go, delivering a new program record of 3:33.63 in a very challenging second heat. The Roadrunners finished 15th overall, just missing the qualification field to move on to nationals.
The highest individual finisher for the day, Sandnes, Norway sophomore Ims finished 17th in her second career 400-meter hurdles quarterfinal, crossing the line with a 57.85 clocking. In the 400-meter quarterfinal, Evergreen, Jamaica senior Findley was 24th with a time of 53.40.
Opening the field events for the final day, Mission, Texas senior Daisy Monie tossed 48.17m (158-0) in the discus for 39th overall. Topping UTSA in the high jump, Tallinn, Estonia junior Edlin Laur and Jakobsli, Norway sophomore Mia Lien both reached 1.76m (5-9.25) – with Laur coming in 29th and Lien 33rd. Rounding out the field events, sophomore Sioux Falls, South Dakota sophomore Nyariek Kur leapt 12.82m (42-0.75) for 36th in her first Regional triple jump with the Roadrunners.
Up next: Breigan (long jump) and Monie (shot put) join Martín Kouyoumdjian (400m) and Jemuel Miller (triple jump) in moving on to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for June 10-13 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
