Turner set to join the Roadrunner hoops for 2026-27

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s basketball team announced on Friday another addition to the 2026-27 roster, as transfer guard Preston Turner is set to join the Roadrunners heading into the third season under head coach Austin Claunch. Turner marks the fifth spring signing announced by the Roadrunners.

“Preston is a versatile guard who brings size, toughness and shot-making ability to our program,” Claunch said. “He’s proven he can stretch the floor at a high level, shooting nearly 45 percent from three, while also giving us length and versatility on the perimeter. We’re excited about the experience, confidence and competitive edge he brings to UTSA basketball.”

Coming in at 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds, Turner played last season at Eastern Illinois in his redshirt junior season. He appeared in 31 games with nine starts, averaging 7.7 points in 20.9 minutes with 12 double-figure scoring performances, shooting 46.3 percent from the field, 44.8 percent from the perimeter and 81.5 percent at the free throw line. He led the Panthers with 43 triples (1.4 per game), adding 1.7 rpg, 27 assists and 25 steals.

After redshirting at Truman State out of high school, Turner played two seasons at Mineral Area College close to home in southeastern Missouri, appearing in 62 total games with 31 starts. As a sophomore, he started 28-of-31 games, averaging 13.7 points on 40.7 percent shooting, 5.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals. That season, he was named First Team All-Region 16 and First Team All-Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) – collecting 23 double-digit scoring appearances in 2024-25. While earning Second Team All-Region 16 and All-MCCAC honors in 2023-24, he helped the Cardinals to reach as high as the No. 2 spot in the national standings thanks to the No.1 scoring defense in the NJCAA (57.4 ppg), with MAC going on to reach the Region 16 Championship game with a 29-3 final record. Turner averaged 11.3 ppg on 44.9 percent shooting with 4.7 rpg and 1.1 spg that season for the Cardinals. Originally hailing from Ellsinore, Missouri and East Carter High School, Turner was a standout basketball and baseball player, named to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MOBCA) All-State first team and District Player of the Year as a senior, earning all-conference honors three times in basketball and twice in baseball.
