KATHMANDU, Nepal — UTSA’s Sam Acharya successfully defended his individual title at the 12th Nepal International Amateur Golf Championship at Gokarna Golf Club.
Playing in his hometown, the rising sophomore fired a 9-under-par 207 to repeat as champion, finishing four shots ahead of Vivaan Ubhayakar.
After opening the 54-hole tournament with a 3-under 69, Acharya registered a 6-under 66 in round two, setting him up with a five-stroke advantage entering the final day. He then turned in an even-par scorecard that featured four birdies on Friday to secure his second straight crown at the event.
One year ago, he posted a 20-under 196 (66-60-70) to cruise to a 10-shot win in this event at the same course.
Acharya recently wrapped up his freshman campaign with the Roadrunners that saw him play in five tournaments, posting a 74.63 stroke average over 16 rounds. He fired a 10-under-par 206 (66-70-70) to place fourth at the Golden Nugget Invitational and he tied for 11th after registering a 222 (79-68-75) at the Military City Collegiate to help UTSA claim the team title.
