UTSA advances plans for baseball facility enhancements and student-athlete experience

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Athletics is actively advancing plans to enhance Roadrunner Field as part of its ongoing commitment to invest in championship-caliber resources for its baseball program and continue the momentum surrounding one of the nation’s rising collegiate baseball programs.

Currently in the planning and design phase, the project will focus on elevating both the student-athlete and fan experience. Plans feature a dedicated player development center that includes a new locker room, student-athlete lounge, equipment areas, batting cages and pitching development spaces designed to support player growth, performance and recovery year-round. This phase of the project is anticipated to break ground in early 2027.

Additional enhancements to fan amenities, including premium hospitality and seating areas, upgraded concessions and improved restroom facilities, are also being planned. Concepts under evaluation include enhanced social gathering areas and fan-focused spaces designed to create an even more energized and community-centered game-day atmosphere for students, alumni, families and supporters. These enhancements carefully align with the longer term vision for baseball on campus.

Originally outlined in February 2024 as part of UTSA Athletics’ $57 million Bold Champions facilities and capital investment initiative, investments to the baseball and softball facilities represent a key component of the department’s long-term strategy to elevate its competitive profile and continue building an elite student-athlete experience. A phased approach is underway representing approximately $20 million in investments, with additional project details and timelines for the baseball and softball facility enhancements to be announced later this fall as planning progresses and key milestones are reached.

“We are fully committed to continuing the upward trajectory of our baseball program,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos. “Coming off an NCAA Super Regional appearance last year and now winning a second straight American Conference Regular Season Championship shows that the program can compete on the national stage. As we build on the program’s success, enhancing our facilities is a priority that will position UTSA Baseball to continue to compete at the highest level while elevating the experience for our student-athletes, fans and supporters. This is an important step in our broader vision, and we are excited about the momentum behind this effort. We’re excited to see this project come to life and cannot thank enough the many supporters and baseball alumni who are investing to make this vision become reality.”

University leadership noted that the project reflects UT San Antonio’s broader commitment to investing in spaces that foster student success, strengthen community pride and elevate the overall campus and fan experience.

“Investing in athletic facilities is about creating environments where our student-athletes can thrive and where our community can come together around shared experiences and pride,” said Andrea Marks, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “These enhancements support the continued growth of UTSA Athletics while helping create memorable experiences for students, alumni, fans and families. They also reflect the university’s continued investment in the people and programs that reflect our ambition, as well as driving momentum and national visibility for UT San Antonio.”

“These initial upgrades are a testament to our commitment to advancing excellence,” said UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy. “Our student-athletes deserve the very best, and these facilities reflect our support of their success both on and off the field. We will continue to make steady progress in advancing UTSA athletics as one of the foundations of our new university as we move forward.”

During the project’s silent phase, donors played a critical role in moving the Baseball Development Center from vision to reality. To date, 22 major gifts have been pledged, including more than $500,000 contributed by 18 former baseball players. Their generosity has been instrumental in advancing the project to the next phase of construction.

“The vision for our facility speaks directly to the future of this program,” said head coach Pat Hallmark. “These enhancements will have a transformative impact on player development, recruiting and the overall experience for our team and fans. The planned enhancements build on recent investments at Roadrunner Field, including the installation of a state-of-the-art video board in 2026, expanded seating with chairbacks and a new press box prior to the 2024 season. These upgrades have contributed to increased attendance and an enhanced game-day atmosphere.”

The baseball project is part of UTSA’s broader athletics facilities initiative, which includes the construction of a new basketball and volleyball training facility, plans for a softball player development center, a nutrition center and continued improvements to football practice facilities.

In addition to a new softball player development training center, UTSA is exploring plans to enhance fan amenities at the softball stadium, where the program set a single-game attendance record and registered numerous sellouts this past season.

This project is the latest in the continued evolution of UTSA Athletics facilities during Campos’ tenure since her arrival in January 2018.

Opened in August 2021, UTSA’s Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE) is a $40.4 million, ~95,000 square-foot facility that serves as the hub of UTSA Athletics. The facility includes academic spaces, a sports medicine center, strength and conditioning facilities, locker rooms, meeting rooms, staff and coaches’ offices, an equipment room and practice fields.

UTSA Park West Fieldhouse officially opened in July 2023 on the Park West Campus. The $8 million, 14,325 square-foot facility includes a multipurpose community room, locker rooms, team lounges, a sports medicine center and equipment areas supporting the soccer and track and field/cross country programs.

In 2022, TPC San Antonio was officially announced as the home of the UTSA men’s and women’s golf programs. In addition to practice and competition access on both championship courses, the facility includes study halls, team rooms and The Learning Center, an instructional facility equipped with advanced golf technology.

Together, these investments reflect UTSA Athletics’ continued commitment to providing premier resources for student-athletes, strengthening competitive excellence and creating facilities that elevate the fan experience while fostering Roadrunner pride across the university and San Antonio community.
