SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team will hit the road for a three-game American Conference series against Wichita State spanning Friday and Saturday at Wilkins Stadium. The ‘Runners and Shockers will open things up with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 10 a.m., ahead of the finale on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Roadrunners (20-22, 8-7 American) will look to bounce back after taking one of three from South Florida in their previous conference series, and at 8-7 sit in a three-way tie for fourth. The Shockers (21-15, 9-6 American), meanwhile, own sole possession of third entering the weekend after snagging a series win over Tulsa.
For UTSA, freshman Arlette Hernandez has played a major role in the circle, ranking 13th nationally with 21 games started and 15th in complete games with 12. She’s tossed 123.2 innings for the squad, representing the 21st most in the NCAA, and is 29th with 115 strikeouts.
Sophomore Sabrina Wick paces the offense with a .358 batting average, while freshman Brookelynn Meador has launched seven home runs on the season. She, junior Taryn Madlock, redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid and junior Samantha Mundine all have logged over 20 RBIs across the campaign.
Wichita State leads the American with 54 home runs and averages 1.50 per game, slotting them 25th nationally. Ausha Moore tops the team with 11, and she leads the conference with a .540 on-base percentage and a 1.305 OPS. Moore has driven in a team-best 31 RBIs, and Trinity Allen boasts the top batting average at .395.
The pitching staff maintains a 4.18 ERA, led by Ava Sliger, with a 3.07 mark and a 1.18 WHIP. Sliger is 5-1 on the season, and Ryley Nihart has gone 8-9 this season with 67 strikeouts.
