COLUMBIA, Mo. — Guided by Brayden Bare’s tie for fifth place, UTSA finished 10th at the Tiger Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at The Club at Old Hawthorne (par 70/7,158 yards).
Bare earned a share of fifth by firing a 2-under-par 208 to notch his third top 10 of the spring season and fifth of his collegiate career. The redshirt junior matched the best finish of his collegiate career posted last month at the Golden Nugget Invitational to help lead the Roadrunners to their seventh top-10 team showing of the campaign.
With the field finishing out the second round this morning after it was suspended due to darkness Monday night, Bare closed out a 1-under 69 with a par on the 10th to record a two-shot improvement from his opening round. He then fired a 2-under 68 for the final 18 holes to move 11 spots up the leaderboard and match his top finish as a Roadrunner.
Bare’s final round featured four birdies against only a pair of bogeys. Teeing off from No. 11 in the shotgun start, the Waco native bounced back from a bogey on the 13th with a birdie on the 177-yard, par-3 16th. After reeling off six straight pars, he dipped to 1-under for the round when he logged a three on the 393-yard fifth. He then countered a bogey on the seventh with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9-10 to finish off his 12th par-or-better scorecard of the season.
Bare ended up just four shots behind the individual winner, Missouri’s Veikka Viskari, who fired a 6-under 204 (68-65-71). He tallied a team-high 11 birdies — the fifth-best total in the field — and played the par fours at 3-under par for the week.
Meanwhile, David Martinez tied for 14th with a 2-over 212, charting his second top-15 finish in four tournaments this season. The sophomore from Houston opened the event with a 3-under 67 on Monday morning before closing out a 71 on Tuesday morning that was highlighted by three birdies and an eagle on the 393-yard, par-4 fifth hole. He posted a 74 in the final round on the strength of two more birdies, taking his total to nine for the week.
Joshua Hong tied for 63rd with a 221 (70-76-75), while Francisco Solorza and Logan Vargas rounded out the UTSA lineup in 81st (77-73-76—226) and 93rd (78-78-75—231), respectively.
In the team race, UTSA posted an 866 (285-289-292), two shots better than Wichita State and seven in front of a tie for 12th between Illinois State and UTRGV in the 19-team field.
Missouri captured the team title with an 833, followed by Iowa State (840), Saint Mary’s (845), Xavier (847) and No. 39 Kansas (848) in the top five.
The Roadrunners will return to action April 27-29 when they travel to Sarasota, Florida, for the American Conference Championship.
