BRYAN, Texas — Daniela Abonce’s 1-over-par scorecard led UTSA on the second day of the “Mo”Morial Invitational on Tuesday at Traditions Club (par 72/6,406 yards).
Abonce posted a 73 on the strength of four birdies, including three in a row on Nos. 3-5, to pace the Roadrunners in the second round of the 54-hole event. The senior from Mexico began her day on No. 10 and bounced back from a couple of bogeys with a three on the 331-yard, par-4 13th hole. She later countered a pair of bogeys with her three straight circled numbers, writing down a three on both the 391-yard third and 356-yard fourth before logging a four on the 511-yard fifth. She settled for three pars and a bogey down the stretch and has moved 26 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 41st (+12).
Meanwhile, Maria Bastarrica is the top Roadrunner, as the junior from Spain is tied for 29th. After opening with a 78 on Monday, she carded a 3-over 75 that featured six birdies with five as part of a 32 on the back nine. She registered threes on the 381-yard 12th and 331-yard 13th holes before adding three in a row on Nos. 16-18. She added her sixth circled number with a four on the fifth, giving her nine birdies on the week, the second most in the field.
Lauren Rios is tied for 45th (77-80—157), while Victoria Schuldt and Kayla Black round out the UTSA lineup in 63rd (80-81—161) and 66th (82-80—162), respectively. Competing as an individual, Sydney Bisgrove has a share of 53rd (84-75—159).
UTSA posted a nine-shot improvement as a team on Tuesday and is in sole possession of 13th place (317-308—625, seven strokes ahead of Lipscomb and only a half-dozen shots out of a four-way tie for ninth that includes conference foe Charlotte.
No. 24 Baylor has the 36-hole lead with a 592, followed by third-ranked Texas A&M (593) and No. 35 Missouri (598) in the top three.
Missouri’s Jade Zamora leads all players at even-par 144 (72-72).
The final round is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Wednesday.
