COLUMBIA, Mo. — David Martinez has a share of sixth place and UTSA is in 12th after the opening day of the Tiger Intercollegiate on Monday at The Club at Old Hawthorne (par 70/7,158 yards).
Martinez is sitting at 3-under par, and the Roadrunners are only one shot out of the top 10, as the field played at least 33 holes before the second round was suspended due to darkness. Round two will resume at 8 a.m. followed immediately by the final round.
Martinez opened his week with a 3-under 67 in the first round, notching his second-best score versus par of the season. Beginning on No. 12 in the shotgun start, the sophomore from Houston posted four pars and a bogey over his first five holes before logging back-to-back birdies with threes on the 353-yard 17th and 402-yard 18th. He then dropped to 2-under with a birdie on the 411-yard, par-4 third before getting to 3-under with a three on the 393-yard fifth.
Martinez has made it through 15 holes of the second round, as his scorecard has him at even par thanks to a trio of birdies and an eagle on No. 5. He has tallied seven birdies and is one of seven players to record an eagle so far. He is four shots off the pace of 7-under set by Missouri’s Veikka Viskari.
Brayden Bare is three shots back of Martinez in a tie for 18th at even par. The redshirt junior began his day with a 1-over 71 on the strength of four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 17-18. The Waco native has added two more circled numbers through 17 holes of his second round.
Joshua Hong is tied for 62nd (+5). The freshman from Mexico shot an even-par 70 that featured five birdies in the morning, and he has three holes remaining on his round-two that shows two more birdies.
Francisco Solorza and Logan Vargas round out the UTSA lineup in 79th (+9) and 96th (+14), respectively.
In the team standings, UTSA is 11-over par, two shots ahead of a tie between Drake and UTRGV and only on shot shy of a tie for ninth between Illinois State, South Dakota State and Wichita State.
Missouri leads the team race at 10-under, followed by Nebraska (-7), Iowa State (-2), Saint Mary’s (-2) and Xavier (-1).
