Breigan earns long jump gold at the Texas Relays

SAN ANTONIO – Four-time All-American UTSA track & field junior Ida Breigan lived up to her precedent on Friday at the 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, topping the long jump field to lead the Roadrunners’ second day of competition in Austin and San Marcos at the Bobcat Invitational.

The Fredrikstad, Norway native, Breigan hit a season-high 6.71m (22-0.25) on her first approach in Friday’s long jump at the historic elite national meet, never looking back as she ran away with the event victory in her second jump of the outdoor season – besting the next finisher by .33m with a notable tailwind. Her mark is the longest jump measurement recorded in the NCAA this outdoor season to date. Breigan wasn’t the only Roadrunner excelling in the long jump on Friday, as sophomore Brina Likar secured fourth place with a season-best 6.22m (20-5.0) leap. On the men’s side of the event, freshman Cyrill Kernbach went 7.21m (23-8.0) for 12th place.

Opening the day’s competition in Austin, sophomore Charlie Staddon just missed reaching the 110-meter hurdle final with a season-best 13.86-second clocking in the fourth heat of the preliminary, finishing 10th overall. In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, freshman Mya Robinson was 14th after turning in a time of 14.56.

Also at the Texas Relays, Men's 4x400-meter relay squad of Martín Kouyoumdjian, Israel Wray, Jamarri Bowie and A.J. Breault finished in a 3:14.52 for 14th in the prelims. In sprints in Austin, freshman Tyler Madison was 37th in the 100-meter preliminary at 10.72 seconds.

In the lone race at the Bobcat Invitational, sophomore Cortlin Salge was 45th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:05.29.

Wrapping things up on Saturday, April 4, the Texas Relays discus is at 10 a.m., triple jump at 3 p.m. and shot put is at 4 p.m. No UTSA performers will be competing on the final day of the Bobcat Invitational.

Up next: The Roadrunners will head to College Station to compete in Texas A&M’s 44 Farms Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium, April 9-11.
