AUSTIN, Texas – It was a big finish for the UTSA track & field teams on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium, closing out the 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with four medal-worth performances on the final day, including a pair of event victories for thrower Daisy Monie.
A grad transfer from Kansas State, Monie opened the day with a clutch performance in the discus, rising to the occasion on her final throw with a 51.83m (170-0) toss that blew the competition wide open with a 1.96m margin of victory. Her event-winning measurement delivered a new UTSA record, surpassing Lacee Barnes’ (51.67m) 2022 mark and is the new 22nd-best throw in the NCAA West Region. A Mission, Texas native, Monie also delivered in the final UTSA event of the day, hitting 15.94m (52-3.75) on her fifth shot put attempt to edge out Houston’s Cleo Agyepong by just .01m, registering the 11th-best measurement in the West, 30th in the nation and No. 3 on the UTSA all-time performances list. Her discus output is now No. 2 in the American Conference, while she moves to the top of the conference in the shot put.
Returning to the track for his second running of the event on the weekend, sophomore Charlie Staddon earned second place in the 110-meter hurdles invitational with a 14.14 clocking.
Redshirt junior Jemuel Miller added another medal to the Roadrunners’ cache, going 15.71m (51-6.5) in his first outdoor triple jump of the season, registering that skip on the first jump of the finals to secure third place. His jump leads the American and debuts at No. 8 nationally. On the women’s side, sophomore Nyariek Kur was also making her first outdoor jump in the triple, reaching 12.30m (40-4.25) for the fourth-best mark in the American.
Saturday’s additions bring UTSA’s medal count to five at the elite national meet, coupling with Ida Breigan’s long jump win for three event victories – with the Roadrunners turning in 10 top-10 performances on the weekend.
Up next: The Roadrunners will head to College Station to compete in Texas A&M’s 44 Farms Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium, April 9-11.
