SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team will close out American Conference play this weekend, as it is set to visit East Carolina for a three-game series spanning Friday through Sunday at Joyner Family Stadium. Due to weather in the area, the squads will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. CT, ahead of the finale Sunday at noon CT.
The Roadrunners (23-29, 11-13 American) dropped a series to Charlotte last time out and enter the week sitting seventh in the league standings. The Pirates (29-14, 13-11), meanwhile, sit fourth ahead of the season's final series.
Against the 49ers, sophomore Sabrina Wick was stellar, hitting .667 with five RBIs and three runs scored. She hit a home run and was 8-for-12 with three stolen bases and a 1.548 OPS.
Freshman Arlette Hernandez has been a workhorse for the ‘Runners, ranking ninth nationally with 28 games started, 11th with 17 complete games, 12th with 169.2 innings pitched, and 35th with 142 strikeouts on the campaign. As a team, UTSA ranks 12th with 27 double plays turned.
ECU carries momentum after taking two on the road in Tulsa, marking their second consecutive series win. The Pirates excel at small ball, ranking second in the NCAA with 58 sacrifice bunts, and defensively, they rank 20th with 25 double plays. Individually, Chloe Geijer is seventh with 0.30 sacrifice bunts per game, and six sac flies for Jenna Krol are 12th.
Kanisha Anderson leads the way with a .378 batting average, and Anna Sawyer is not far behind at .363. Emma Jackson has amassed 54 RBIs and tops the team with 21 home runs. Also in the double-digit home run club, Morgan Johnson has left the yard 17 times, and Kate Annie Dalton 10.
The pitching staff owns a 3.57 ERA, with Taylor Apple at 3.01 with a 13-8 record. Also, with 13 wins, Kendall Frost is 13-16 with a 3.83 ERA and five saves.
