SAN ANTONIO – Leading up to the third season under head coach Austin Claunch, the UTSA men’s basketball team announced on Wednesday the second spring signing for the 2026-27 roster, adding transfer KJ Tenner as the second guard announced this week following the signing notice for Josiah LeGree on Tuesday.
A 6-foot, 170-pound point guard originally out of Memphis, Tennessee, Tenner arrives in San Antonio directly from Murray State, where he appeared in 33 games with seven starts in helping the Racers to third place in the Missouri Valley Conference and the program’s first postseason tournament since 2025 – the season ending in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) with a 20-13 record. As a sophomore logging 16.7 minutes at Murray, Tenner averaged 6.0 points while shooting 45.6 percent on field goals, 41.7 percent from three and 74.1 percent at the line. He was third on the team with 68 assists, averaging 2.1 apg. He started his career at West Virginia, playing 30 games with 2.4 ppg in 13.1 minutes, collecting 32 assists, 24 steals and recording a 2.67 assist/turnover ratio.
“KJ is exactly the type of player we want representing UTSA men's basketball,” Claunch said. “He brings toughness, competitiveness and a proven ability to impact winning on both ends of the floor. His experience, leadership and versatility will elevate everyone around him, and we're excited to welcome him and his family to San Antonio. Roadrunner fans are going to love the energy and edge he brings to our program.”
Tenner was the 2024 Tennessee Mr. Basketball in Class 4A coming out of Greater Memphis Area’s Cordova High School, where he averaged 21 points per game in taking his team to just one win shy of making it to the state championships. The Wolves earned Region 8AAAA and District 15AAAA titles en route to the sectional game. Tenner was also named The Commercial Appeal Boys Basketball Player of the Year in 2024, leading the city of Memphis in scoring in back-to-back years, with 28 ppg as a sophomore and 23 ppg as a junior. He was named to the 2024 Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) and Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee (BCAT) All-State teams, was named All-Region 8 and was a two-time District Player of the Year. He arrived at the 1000-point career mark in only 42 games, the fastest in Cordova’s history and went over 1,500 points in his prep career.
