Vargas’ 2-under-par scorecard headlines day two of American Conference Championship

SARASOTA, Fla. — Logan Vargas posted a 2-under-par scorecard to headline UTSA action on day two of the American Conference Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday at Ritz-Carlton Members Club (par 72/7,417 yards).

Vargas fired a 70 to log the Roadrunners’ best round of the week so far. The senior from Lubbock leaped 18 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 26th at 1-over 145 with 18 holes left to play on Wednesday.

Teeing off from No. 10, Vargas bounced back from a bogey on the 13th hole with a birdie on the 559-yard, par-5 15th and eventually closed out a 36 on that side of the course with a par on No. 18. On the front, he countered a bogey on the second with three birdies over a four-hole stretch, making a four on the 535-yard fourth, a three on the 321-yard fifth and a two on the 190-yard seventh. He then rounded out his 13th par-or-better scorecard of the season with a pair of pars.

Joshua Hong is one shot behind Vargas in a tie for 31st at 2-over 146. The true freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, turned in his second straight 73 behind three birdies, all coming on the front side. He posted a four on the 535-yard fourth and on the 571-yard sixth to go with a three on the 448-yard eighth.

Brayden Bare and Francisco Solorza both are part of a tie for 43rd at 5-over 149. Bare, a redshirt junior from Waco, settled for a 77 after opening with a 72 on Monday, while Solorza, a redshirt freshman from Mexico, registered a 78 after notching UTSA’s low opening-round score of 71.

David Martinez rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 50th (75-79—154).

In the team race, the Roadrunners are in 10th place with a 589, 11 shots ahead of Temple, one stroke behind Florida Atlantic and four back of Wichita State.

Memphis leads the team standings (546), followed by No. 22 Charlotte (550) and Rice (559) in the top three.

Diego Do Patrocinio Lourenco of Memphis has the individual lead at 12-under 132 (67-65).

The final round is set for Wednesday with the Roadrunners teeing off from No. 10 beginning at 7:33 a.m. CT.
