UTSA falls to Charlotte in extra innings series finale

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team fell 8-6 in an extra innings American Conference series finale on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (23-29, 11-13 American) dropped the series to the 49ers (28-24, 12-12 American) as freshman Arlette Hernandez (13-13) threw all eight innings in the loss, while Aubrey Yarnall (12-9) earned the win.

Sophomore Sabrina Wick posted a pair of RBIs, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, while freshman Brookelynn Meador and senior Madison Lenton also drove in runs.

UTSA got on the board in the bottom of the first, as Wick and junior Taryn Madlock singled, ahead of a redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid walk. From there, Lenton walked on four straight pitches for a 1-0 Roadrunner lead.

Wick launched a two-run home run in the second, plating senior Caton Letbetter and extending the advantage to three.

Charlotte got its first hit in the fourth, and a crooked number in the fifth resulted in a 3-2 score line.

Down to their last out in the seventh, the 49ers loaded up the bases and a grand slam flipped the script, delivering a 6-4 Charlotte lead.

In the home half, Rucker walked, Wick singled, and Madlock was issued a free pass, putting ducks on the pond with no outs.  From there, a base knock for Meador scored Rucker, and Wick came home on a double play, knotting the contest, 6-6. Charlotte found the third out, sending the game into extra innings.

A two-run home run for the 49ers in the top of the eighth put them back in front, 8-6, and UTSA was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, cementing the Charlotte win.

UTSA will now visit Greenville, North Carolina, for the final series of the regular season against East Carolina, which will span Friday through Sunday at Joyner Family Stadium.
