Program's 1,000th Victory Seals Series Win at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – On Saturday, UTSA Baseball took down Tulane in a road American Conference bout by a score of 8-2. Before recording a single out, the visitors notched six runs, highlighted by a Cade Sadler grand slam. The win vaulted the ‘Runners to 29-13 overall with a 12-5 league record that places them alone in first place. UTSA secured its 17th straight conference series win with its 1,000 victory in program history.

FIRST INNING

As was the case on Friday, an early home run set the tone for the visitors. Caden Miller kicked things off with a solo shot on a full count, taking a 1-0 lead on the first at-bat of the game. Drew Detlefsen and Lane Haworth each followed up with singles before Andrew Stucky was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The ensuing at-bat culminated in an infield single off the bat of Christian Hallmark, keeping the basepaths juiced and scoring Detlefsen.

First baseman Cade Sadler then stepped up to the plate, still with no outs. The senior sent a 1-0 pitch towering to the opposite field, clearing the fence for a grand slam. The blast was his first home run in a UTSA uniform, handing his side a 6-0 lead before a single out was recorded. A hit batter and another single were not enough to add to UTSA’s tally, sending Tulane out to bat down a half dozen. Conor Myles quickly retired the Green Wave, opening his ninth start of the season with a scoreless frame.

THIRD INNING

After allowing another hit in the second, Myles settled in for a stretch of 14 straight at-bats without a base knock. Both sides went down in order to wrap up a speedy third frame, maintaining the 6-0 mark on the scoreboard.

FIFTH INNING

Stucky and Sadler each reached on singles early in the frame. After a failed stolen base attempt, Diego Diaz walked up with two away. The third baseman took a 2-1 offering deep to right field, cruising over the outfield wall for his side’s third home run of the evening. UTSA secured its seventh and eighth scores on the night courtesy of Diaz’s fourth home run this season. In the home half, a leadoff walk was no problem for Myles. The left-handed pitcher mowed down another three hosts, heading to the sixth with just two hits still on his ledger.

SIXTH INNING

While Tulane turned to its fourth pitcher of the evening, Myles continued his start through the sixth frame. Despite a two-out single, the Australian tallied his third and final strikeout in another run-free inning.

SEVENTH INNING

A leadoff walk signaled the end of Myles’ stellar night, cueing Mike DeBattista out of the bullpen. The senior sent one host to first base on a free pass, but escaped with Tulane still in search of its first score.

EIGHTH INNING

A pair of Green Wave singles brought Cody Demont out of the bullpen with one away. Another hit came after a bases-loading walk, sending two hosts around to score. The next pitch went for a popout, prompting the ninth and final inning with an 8-2 margin.

NINTH INNING

Jordan Ballin’s two-out walk went unsupported in the top half, granting the hosts their final chance at the plate. Demont let a one-out single aboard, but an ensuing strikeout and flyout sealed the win for UTSA. The visitors secured their 17th straight conference series win by an 8-2 final mark.
