SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA Football Spring Game ended in a 7-7 tie on Saturday afternoon in front of an estimated 3,000 fans at the Alamodome.
Using a modified scoring system with touchdowns, turnovers and fourth-down stops counting as two points each and field goals, missed field goals and punts scoring one point apiece, the offense built a 5-2 advantage only to see the defense rally back and eventually claim a 7-6 advantage before Jesse Perez’s 35-yard field goal on the final play knotted the score at 7-all.
Touchdown receptions by Will Henderson III and A'Marion Peterson headlined the day for the offense, while the defense forced seven punts.
The opening drive resulted in a 27-yard field goal by Michael Petro that gave the offense a 1-0 lead.
Following a punt, Peterson’s 18-yard touchdown catch over the middle made it 3-1 in favor of the offense.
The defense forced another punt before Henderson turned a short reception from Brandon Tennison near the left sideline into a 69-yard scoring play for a 5-2 advantage for the offense.
The defense then forced punts on four consecutive possessions to take a 6-5 lead before Petro split the uprights from 37 yards to tie things up at 6-all.
Another forced punt gave the defense a 7-6 edge, but Perez drilled a 35-yard field goal on the final play to leave the game in a 7-7 deadlock.
