UTSA to host 49ers in home finale

by Ryan Smith

SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team will wrap up the home slate this weekend, as they are set to host Charlotte in a three-game American Conference series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The squads will meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m., ahead of the Senior Day finale at noon on Sunday.

The Roadrunners (22-27, 10-11 American) are fresh off a series victory over UAB, as they took game one, 8-5 in extra innings, before securing a 3-0 victory in game two. Junior Taryn Madlock was stellar for the squad, hitting for the cycle across the series with the Blazers, going 4-for-10 with a home run, a triple, and a double, logging a .400 batting average and a 1.455 OPS in the process.

Freshman Arlette Hernandez continues to dazzle in the circle with 26 games started, ranking ninth nationally, while 15 complete games are 13th, and 152.2 innings pitched are 15th. She’s struck out 134 batters for the 32nd-most in the NCAA, and all four statistics pace the American.

The ‘Runners and the 49ers (26-23, 10-11 American) enter the weekend both tied with Florida Atlantic for fifth in the American standings with just six conference games remaining.

Charlotte excels defensively, turning the fourth most double plays amongst Division I teams with 28 on the year, and they’re 16th with 22 sac flies on the season.

Individually, Jenna Lord leads the conference with a .439 batting average, 14 doubles, 65 hits and 116 total bases. Teagan Ritchie leads the 49ers with 12 home runs, and Lord is not far behind with 11.

The pitching staff maintains a 4.94 ERA, as Taylor Jones and Brooke Bowling each have nine wins on the campaign. Bowling serves as the team strikeout leader, fanning 68.
